Friday 6-8-18 Jive



Its coming dow to the wire and WESU still needs to raise over $7K to balance our budget for the eyar and make a payment on our new Transmitter. Here's a rundown of some of what's going on in our area this weekend:


The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown presents the Louis Apollon Jazz Trio at The Buttonwood. As part of CT Open House Day this Saturday, The Ultimate Emcee Elvee & Friends bring you a street side Hip Hop performance outside the Buttonwood starting at 1 pm. Washboard Slim & The Bluelights bring you blues, swing, jug band and more to the buttonwood stage, Saturday night. The NEAR and Far Storytellers appear and later Sunday there’s a reception for the June collage and watercolor Art exhibit by Candice Weigle-Spier. www.buttonwood.org

Tomorrow, at Russell Library in Middletown, The Friends of the Library Book Sale continue. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages.  Also at the Russell Library, on Monday, June 11, Readers Theater presents its last play of the season, "Ben Butler," a dramatic reading of a play that's full of wit, wordplay and wiliness. Set during the American Civil War, and with Richard Kamins playing the title role, "Ben Butler" has a message about racism that is still needed today. It will be performed at 7 p.m. in the library's Hubbard Room. The performance is free.

At Café nine, down in New Haven, right about now. The Friday Happy Hour 5pm set features Alison Farrell. Later tonight/Friday Old shool indie rockers Boss Hog shares a bill with Honch. Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends. Saturday night The Split Squad and Dust Hat take the stage. Sunday Matinée brings you A Celebration of the Life and Music of Stacy Phillips, a CT Bluegrass legend who suddenly passes away this week and was schedule to perform at Café Nine this Sunday. The 2018 Portland Music and Arts Festival happens Saturday from noon to 8 pm at Portland Riverfront Park, 284 Brownstone Ave, Portland, Ct. Rain date is June 10th. The festival will feature continual folk, Americana, blues, and rock music, along with arts and crafts booths and food vendors. Performers include Ellen Iovino, Seat of Our Pants, River Run, C.J. West and the Downtown Train, and Plywood Cowboy.   Admission proceeds will benefit The Portland Riverfront Park.


Veterans and military service members are invited to try out rowing and kayaking Saturday at 9:30 am at Riverside Park in Hartford courtesy of the Connecticut Adaptive Rowing Program.  Registration required. www.riverfront.org

Saturday, Middletown’s Recreation Division hosts a Nature Hike at the McCutcheon Park area. A discussion of Native uses is included. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their run of “Becoming Who I Was,” about a young boy’s trek to become a Tibetan monk, through next Monday. At 6:30 its time for the Universal Soundwave with Sistah Tee, offering 2 hrs of Reggae, RnB, and old school souls with a touch of Latin and African music plus health and wellness tips!

at 8:30 Rockadee will take you to The Other Side for some sweet lovers rock and dance hall reggae and RNB spotlighting local artists mixed in with the hit makers.

From 10-11:30 Its time for Strictly off the Head with DJ Cocomotion the music mixologist presenting a live mix show done on the fly with no prepared mixes or blends. Featuring classic hip hop and house and R&B.

then at 11:30 its Yowxa with Connor Clockwize for an hour of Punk rock and fun

At 3am stay tuned for Louisiana Barn Dance from Pacifica.

At 5am you can catch the BBC world Report before we kick of our Saturday morning program with The Celtic Café at 6am followed by Café Italia from 7-8.
