Tues 2-5-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Tuesday, February 4th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds Laughter Yoga this evening, followed by a screening of community documentaries by Wesleyan film students. There’s an Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta on Thursday, and the TJ Thompson Trio plays jazz and more at the Buttonwood on Friday. The Aligned With Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and in the afternoon you’re invited to an Opening Reception for the Cathy Valley art exhibit. Enjoy Americana, folk, and more on Saturday night with double-bill headliners Don Sineti and Stan Sullivan. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven at Café Nine tonight, Lydia Luce takes the stage, performing with Elle Sera. On Wednesday you can catch Big Fang, Keesh/Phoebe, and Fleurs. On stage Thursday are Strawberry Cheesesteak, Pious Mantis, and In Full Effect. The Friday headliner is Zero Years, appearing with Ports of Spain and Pearl Sugar. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Garry Grippo & Friends, followed by the evening show with Tiny Ocean, Oberon Rose, and Murderous Chanteuse. The Sunday Buzz Matinée brings you Pete Mancini, Frank Critelli, and Brian Dolzani, and they round out the weekend later with Zach Russack and Dumlords.  http://www.cafenine.com/  

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on this evening. Wednesday’s community Blues Jam features Gene Donaldson, and it’s Liviu’s International on Thursday with special guests. You can catch blues, country, and more on Friday with The Redliners, and on Saturday The Cartells are in the house with jazz, swing, Motown and more; bring your dancing shoes. The Russell Library in Middletown hosts the Racial Justice Book Group this evening to discuss “The Cooking Gene” by Michael Twitty. Scrabble Wednesday happens at 5 pm, followed by a Family Game Night at 7 pm. There’s an offsite book discussion Thursday at Stubborn Beauty Brewery to talk about “Small Hours” by Jennifer Kitches. Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces that The Middletown Art Academy hosts a Mixed Media Art Workshop this evening to celebrate the Chinese Year of Earth Pig. The Joe Bun Keo art installation and exhibit, Silence Like Lasagna, is open at the Middlesex Community College, and there’s an Opening Reception Thursday on campus. And SAP, Grayling, Jared Knapik, and Carlos Danger appear at the MAC 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op Friday at 7 pm. On Saturday, the MAC hosts a record release event with Tier, Ryan White, and No Stranger. The Recreation Division invites you to a Family Valentine’s Day event Saturday at the Senior and Community Center where you can make valentines for senior veterans and enjoy games and refreshments. They’ve also got workshops to make wind chimes and sun catchers. The reschedule date for the Middletown Teen Talent Search is this Saturday at Oddfellow’s Playhouse. There will be cash prizes. Widely acclaimed local brass band The Funky Dawgs bring you two free shows this week. Tonight, you can catch them in an all ages show at Manchester High School. On Wednesday, they play a 21+ gig at BAR New Haven.

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown sponsors an Opening Reception for the exhibit “Bestiary” Thursday at the Davison Art Center. The premier performance of joyUsjustUS, an urban Latin dance experience with CONTRA-TIEMPO, happens Friday at the CFA Theater. There’s a memorial celebration on Saturday at The Russell House to honor Jon Barlow and his legacy in music and the liberal arts, as well as a guided exhibition tour of Audible Bacillus at the Zilkha Gallery. The third annual Wesleyan FluteFest Concert happens Sunday evening at Crowell Concert Hall.  All events are free. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa

Seth Adams performs at Spectra Wired Café’s Acoustic Thursdays event this week. There’s a Pasos & Connections Latin dance class Thursday at the Hartford Public Library, as well as an opening reception for the Hartford Hip-Hop exhibition. Little River Restoratives hosts an Off the Record Indie Night Thursday at 9:30 pm. It’s Second Saturdays for Families this week at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art. Enjoy free admission, story-telling, music, and more. And the Connecticut Historical Society invites you to a special behind the scenes tour, “Love and Lust,” this Saturday. The Sarah Hanahan Quintet performs at the Hartford Public Library on Sunday at 3 pm in their ongoing Baby Grand Jazz series. Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Thursday with Tim Reynolds & TR3. Upstate and Belle of the Fall take the Space stage on Saturday, and on Sunday you can catch Dysrhythmia, Cleric, and Pyrrhon. Infinity Hall in Hartford reminds you it’s No Fee Wednesday this week. They’ve got blues and blues rock on Friday with Walter Trout and Eric Gales. Folk/rock legend Don McLean takes the stage on Saturday.  At Infinity Norfolk, it’s Open Mic in the Bistro on Thursday, and on Friday they bring you Al Jardine, a founding member of The Beach Boys. The Rockfall Foundation hosts a screening of “Growing Cities,” a documentary about urban farming, tonight at 7 pm at the Goldsmith Family Cinema on the Wesleyan campus as part of their ongoing Environmental Film Series. www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice/

 Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues ““Free Solo,” a documentary about climbing El Capitan without a rope, and “The Invisibles,” a German docudrama about four real-life Jews hiding in plain sight in WWII Berlin. Also continuing is a special one-week showing of “The Original Laurel and Hardy Restored,” featuring five shorts from the UCLA archives. They open their annual Oscar-nominee short film series on Friday in categories including Animation, Documentary, and Live Action. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Mary Queen of Scots,” a film about the 16th century rivalry between Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth, through tomorrow. There’s a one-night screening of “Boy Erased,” about a gay man sent to a conversion camp, on Thursday. On Friday they open a run of “A Star is Born,” with Bradley Cooper and Lada Gaga. Sunday’s matinée is “Young Picasso,” as part of their Exhibition On Screen series, and in the evening they open a run of “Shoplifters,” a film about a Japanese family’s solution to living in poverty. The Russell Library in Middletown is screening “I Know a Man. . . Ashley Bryan” Wednesday at 6 pm. It’s a film about a children’s book author and WWII veteran who’s life work is inspired by his African heritage. www.russelllibrary.org

Right after the Jive at Five, stay tuned for Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat from 5:05-6pm. DJ 
Cheshire Cat says: I’ve got a song in my heart, a chemical imbalance in my head and a musical library at my fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

From 6-8pm, catch Acoustic Blender with Bill Revill - an eclectic selection of new and older folk, Americana, bluegrass, blues and other music that has a roots influence with a concert listing at 7pm and frequent concert and festival ticket giveaways. Essex and London based Singer/songwriter Larry Kaplan will be live in the studio tonight with Bill.

From 8-9pm, it’s The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry, a weekly show featuring live and local Connecticut arts and music.

After J-Cherry’s slot, it’s The Test Patterns Show with Chaim O'Brien-Blumenthal until 10. To describe The Test Patterns Show would be an exercise in futility. The sound of things falling down the stairs.

From 10-11pm, DJ Joshinvents takes you to (1, 3, 5) The Audible Underground. Come explore a variety of underground music by independent or relatively unknown artists from many genres, while occasionally discussing current events neglected by mainstream media!

11-Midnight, it’s Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous. We consume. Then we talk about it.

From Midnight-1am, catch (1, 3, 5) Al's Bum Reviews with DJ In Da Wind and DJ Marjlin. We deep dive into a different album every show and give them the stamp of approval or the cone of shame.

From 1-2am, there’s (1, 3, 5) Road Trip with DJ G and DJ Vix. Every show covers a different city, featuring new and rising artists all from the same hometown. No gas money required.

From 2-3am, tune in to (1, 3, 5) What’s Goin’ On? with Sam. Focus on an artist with songs under 1,000,000 plays and deep-dive on their career and their music. Also catch music reviews.

At 3am, stay tuned for 2 hrs of funk, soul, and RnB on Up Front Soul from Sanguine Fromage from Pacifica. 

And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
