Good evening, it's Monday, February 25th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.


Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight hosted by Bill Katz. Simple Tai Chi with Mike McEwen Laughter Yoga happens Wednesday evenings and Thursdays at noon, and the Middlesex Drum Circle meets Thursday night. The Story City Troupe takes the stage Friday night with the theme of “Good Fit/Bad Fit.” The Aligned With Source Workshop is on as usual Saturday morning, and you can rock it out with the Sunny Train Family Concert Saturday afternoon. In the evening, it’s Moon Train, an almost-acoustic band playing folk, jazz, bluegrass and more. You’re invited to worship Sunday morning at 10 am with Rev. Ronnie Bantum and Pastor Sandra Steele. You’re invited to view the #Balance for Better Women’s Art Show starting Friday, that runs throughout March. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Monday brings you Landry Day, Autopilot, and Glambat. It’s a Culture Showcase on Tuesday with June B. Bougie, T-Fly, Badd Chargie, and Gale Salvo. The Jacob Jolliff Band and Five in the Chamber take the stage on Wednesday. On Thursday, you can catch Grawlix, The Right Offs, and Mickey Blurr. Friday’s Happy Hour features the Kat, Matt, & Tor Trio, and the late show’s got Dwight & Nicole, appearing with Tiny Ocean. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show’s got Um, Dr. Martino, and Fetzig. . The Sunday Buzz Matinée brings The Manchurians, and Bluescall, and they finish out the weekend with Japhoria. http://www.cafenine.com/  

At the State House in New Haven tonight, Rob Lawrence and Friends will cure your case of the Mondays at 7pm! On Friday, they have Honeycutt with Mandala and Mooncha for a night of indie, alternative, and experimental pop. Saturday, you can catch DAP the Contract with Chef the Chef and June Jissle. The State House rounds out the week with a Blues 'n' Brisket event - special guests play the blues while you can chow down on some incredible brisket. https://statehousepresents.com/ 

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it’s Jazz Mondays, with the John Hasselback III Group. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s community Blues Jam features Tim McDonald, and it’s Liviu’s International on Thursday with special guests. On Friday night, singer/songwriter Kim Trusty sings blues, jazz, soul, roots, and more, and Grayson Hugh & The Moon Hawks comes back for a return visit Saturday night. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

The Russell Library in Middletown invites you to hear Kevin Cole tonight at 7 pm presenting “Connecticut River: From Sea to Source.” The Connecticut Poetry Society holds their monthly meeting Wednesday evening, and there’s a Teen Volunteer Orientation session Thursday night. Friday night’s offsite Book Group takes place at the RaMa LuNa Center for Yoga, discussing Jane McGonigal’s “Super Better.”  There’s Mindfulness Meditation Saturday morning, and bring your kids to meet Dinobrarian Rex! Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that Mineva, Greet Death, Reduction Plan, and Roseate will be at the Mac 650 Gallery & Artist CoOp Tuesday. And Darling Fitch performs the poetry pop opera “Revelations” at the Mac Thursday night. The Art Guild of Middletown holds a field trip to the Wadsworth Atheneum Thursday for the American Moderns watercolor show.. The GM Chorale vocal chamber ensemble Alchemy performs Come to the Music Sunday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cromwell. Don’t forget that the Skating Rink is open on weekends. Manic Presents is at the College Street Music Hall on Tuesday with Vince Staples: Smile, You’re On Camera, appearing with Buddy and Armani White. They move on to The Space in Hamden on Thursday with Weakened Friends, Well Wisher, and Two Headed Girl. On Friday it’s Hailey Know, Brett Cameron, and the Como Brothers. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown sponsors a Performance Reading Tuesday evening by writer and audiobook narrator Nick Hahn. It’s a local author night on Wednesday where you can hear experts on money, divorce, and retirement. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown hosts a variety of free events this week. On Friday and Saturday, the Art History Symposium “Canonicity Revisited,” takes place at Boger Hall. May Klug performs a Senior Recital at Memorial Chapel Friday evening. There’s a guided exhibition tour of Audible Bacillus on Saturday at the Zilkha Gallery. Also at the Zilkha, the experimental music group lucky dragons performs Other Transformations on Sunday. You’re invited to the Wesleyan University Orchestra Children’s Concert and Musical Instrument Petting Zoo Sunday at Crowell Concert Hall. The Arch Street Tavern in Hartford holds a Tribute to Rick James Wednesday night in their Boo-Yah’s Free Funk series. Moon Matrix will be there on Friday, and they present Strange Machines on Saturday. Mark Nomad performs at the Acoustic Thursday session at the Spectra Wired Café this week. Little River Restoratives hosts an Off the Record Indie Night Thursday at 9:30 p.m. First Friday House Music happens at the Tisane Euro-Asia Café this week. Join Author, Musician, Janet Ettele on Saturday, March 2nd at The Levi E Coe Library in Middlefield, CT  where she will discuss the every-day practicality of certain Buddhist principles to cultivate inner peace, a necessary ingredient for world peace. She will also perform original music with record producer Gary Lefkowith. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their annual Oscar-nominee short film series, along with “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” a documentary about two young black men in Alabama. Also continuing is “Rubén Blades is Not My Name,” about the legendary musician who brought Salsa to a world audience, and “Roma,” a movie of domestic strife and social hierarchy in Mexico City. On Friday they open “To Dust,” a dark comedy about a Hasidic Jew widower, and “Never Look Away,” a German film of love, war, and art spanning three eras. There’s a one-time showing of “Water Makes Us Wet – An Ecosexual Adventure” on Friday, including a post-film Q&A with filmmakers Annie Sprinkle and Beth Stephens.  Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues  the 1952 Japanese classic, “The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice”. On Thursday they open Oscar winner “Green Book,” a story about racially mismatched characters in 1962 America. “If Beale Street Could Talk” opens on Sunday. From 6:30-8pm, it’s 75% Folk with Michael Benson - A mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.


Until 9:30, Chip Austin brings you (2,4) Unfocused Folk. Americana music from Nashville and around the world including Folk, acoustic Country and roots-Rock from both emerging and veteran artists.

From 12:30-1:30am (2, 4) Influenza airs with DJ Jamsterdam and DJ Celiac. Dig into the origins, relationships, and influences of contemporary artists. Various genres of music will merge here to expose how modern artists found their direction.


Until 2:30am, there’s (2, 4) Cloggin the Noggin with DJ Ween and DJ Oatneel. Every day is national something day. We clog your nog with facts and know-how about the thing of the day. A fresh theme every week and music that catches your vibes where they are.


From 2:30-3:30am Roots World is on air. Roots World Radio takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.


From 3:30-4am is Nutmeg Junction, a new originally scripted audio theater program that celebrates every genre of the golden age of radio.


And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
