Tues 10-30-18 Jive


Good evening, it's Tuesday, October 30th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree hosts Piggy-Palooza tonight, a comedy show with Sammy Obeid to benefit Arthur’s Acres Animal Sanctuary. It’s the monthly Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta on Thursday. Story City Troup takes the stage on Friday night with the theme of “Distance.” The Aligned with Source workshop happens Saturday morning, and The Kennedys—Pete and Maura—are back Saturday night with their acoustic folk pop show. Enjoy Rosie Warren’s art exhibit of abstracts throughout the month of November.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, Café Nine brings you Christian Death and Witch Hair. Wednesday’s offerings are Shake ‘n’ Vibrate, and Ryxno. You can hear Bill Kirchen and Dan Liparini on Thursday. Friday’s Happy Hour features Burning Sensations, followed by the late show with the Kurt Baker Combo, Kris Rodgers & The Dirty Gems, and Jacques LeCoque.  Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, and the late show’s got Fiction, O’K and the Night Crew, and Ditch Boys. The Sunday Buzz Matinee headlines Fred Eaglesmith & Tif Ginn, and they round out the weekend in the evening with Terrance Simien & Zydeco Experience. http://www.cafenine.com/ 

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Michael Palin’s Orchestra plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics tonight. The Community Blues Jam happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with special guests. Ryan Hartt & The Blue Hearts take the stage on Friday, and on Saturday it’s a doubleheader with Carl Ricci & 706 Union along with Neal & The Vipers. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Toad’s Place in New Haven hosts a Battle of the Bands on Thursday with Audio Contraband, Carried by VI, and much more. They’ve got a 20thanniversary CD Release Party on Friday with The Breakfast, who are there with Creamery Station. They headline Eden on Sunday night, appearing with Sasha Sloan. www.toadsplace.com

At the Russell Library in Middletown this evening, there’s a Career Program Workshop in the evening at 6 pm, “Interpersonal Communication in a Digital World,” and the Classic Mystery Book group meets at 7 pm. The CT Data Collaborative holds a Data Basics Workshop Wednesday morning, and Scrabble is on board at 5 pm. The Connecticut Poetry Society meets at 6:30 pm. Enjoy music and stories of Italy Thursday at 6:30 pm when the library hosts Italycious with Enzo Bocarino. There’s an Introduction to Microsoft Word workshop Friday morning, and at 6 pm there’s an opening reception for the new art exhibit, New Land, New Art, a collection of works by immigrants. They hold a First Friday Bookclub offsite event at 7 pm at RaMa LuNa Center for Yoga to discuss “Small Great Things” by Jodi Picoult. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown invites you to free Graduate Recitals tonight at 8 pm and Friday at 8:30 pm, both at Memorial Chapel. Enjoy a guided tour of the Kahlil Robert Irving Exhibition at the Zilkha Gallery on Saturday at 1 pm, or a Tea Ceremony with Kiumi Kamanishi and Stephen Morrell at the Mansfield Freeman Center at 2 pm. Both are free. The Fall Senior Thesis Dance Concert series, Building Home, happens Friday and Saturday at the Cross Street Dance Studio. Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom in Hamden tonight with Live Dead & Riders ’69: Electric Halloween Ball. On Thursday they bring you Sean Rowe, appearing with Daphne Lee Martin and S.G. Carlson. It’s the Loner Tour with Caroline Rose on Friday, along with And The Kids. They’ve got The Dodos and Palehound on Saturday, and they finish out the week on Sunday with Ghost of Paul Revere and Charlie Parr. At the College Street Music Hall, it’s Elle King and Cordovas on Saturday night. And in Norwalk’s Wall Street Theater, it’s Blue Öyster Cult: Don’t Fear the Reaper on Wednesday, and Live Dead & Riders ’69: Electric Harvest Tour on Friday. www.manicpresents.com

Events on the Middletown Arts & Culture Office calendar include the Couch Yeti Halloween Cover Show Two at the MAC650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op Wednesday at 7 pm with five bands. There’s an opening reception at the MAC Saturday at 3 pm for their new exhibit by Brian Shaw, Brian Likes Paper: A Collage Story. Cherry Street Station holds its annual Halloween Night Wednesday at 7 pm. Costumes encouraged! The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown sponsors an event on animal themes Thursday at 6 pm. First Church in Middletown invites you to its renewed sanctuary for the Concert & Blessing of Our City, on Sunday, November 4, at 4pm. The event celebrates the 350th anniversary of First Church.  All are welcome! Admission is FREE, donations are appreciated.  The event includes The World Premier of Lee T. McQuillan’s VOICES OF OUR ANCESTORS, a tribute to First Church and its history in Middletown; with Julius P. Williams, president elect of the (US) Conductors Guild, conducting a chamber orchestra, and First Church combined choirs and bell choir, conducted by Shari Lucas,  minister of music and organist for the performance. The Rev. Julia H. Burkey will preside, and the Trevor Davis Dixieland Jazz Band also will perform.  Honored guests include Middletown Mayor Dan Drew, Wesleyan University President Michael Roth, and Middlesex Chamber of Commerce President Larry McHugh.

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:


Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Liyana,” an animated hero’s journey of perseverance, and “The Great Buster: A Celebration,” a documentary about Buster Keaton. Also continuing is “The Wife,” a drama of fame and marriage. On Friday they open “The Border,” a supernatural romantic thriller about a border guard with a special superpower. Tonight, Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford opens “Bad Reputation,” a celebration of punk rocker Joan Jett. It runs through Thursday. “Crazy Rich Asians” opens on Friday, and on Saturday there’s a one-time showing of “Matangi/Maya/M.I.A.,” a film about the Tamil activist and Superbowl hip-hop artist. The 10th annual Middletown International Film Festival concludes tonight with a screening of “Amerika Square,”  at 7 pm at the Russell Library. Two differing friends meet in Athens because of the refugee crisis. And Artists for World Peace hosts its annual Halloween movie/music night Tonight at 7:30 at the DeKoven House in Middletown. at 8pm The Voice of the CITY with J-Cherry is a weekly show featuring live and local Connecticut arts and music.

from 9-10pm The Test Patterns Show brings you The sound of things falling
down the stairs.
at 10pm  (1,3,5) The Audible Underground with DJ Joshinvents. Come explore a variety of underground music by independent or relatively unknown artists from many genres, while occasionally discussing current events neglected by mainstream media!

from 11-midnight, stay tuned for Mixed Media with DJ Pig in the City and DJ Megnanimous. We consume. Then we talk about it.

at midnight (1,3,5) Al's Bum Reviews with DJ In Da Wind and DJ Marjlin. A music show that searches for and reviews narratives, musical themes, and general continuity of albums. The show selects a collection of songs (on and off the album) to dig deeply into a new album every week.

from 1-2am (1,3,5) Road Trip with DJ Vix. Every show covers a different city, featuring new and rising artists from the same hometown. No gas money required.

from 2-4am stay tuned for Upfront Soul with Sanguine fromage from Pacifica.
