WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well
as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our
student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.
I’m Maria Johnson, producer and host of "Reasonably Catholic: Keeping the Faith," which airs every first, third and fifth Tuesday, from 4 to right before the Jive at Five. Tomorrow, we mark the feasts of All Saints and All Souls, as well as what would have been the 95th birthday of Reasonably Catholic's inaugural guest and patron saint, Passionist Father John Baptist Pesce, who died recently. Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Anything Goes Open Mic tonight hosted by Kyla. On Wednesday it’s Piggy-Palooza, a comedy show with Sammy Obeid to benefit Arthur’s Acres Animal Sanctuary. It’s the monthly Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta on Thursday. Story City Troup takes the stage on Friday night with the theme of “Distance.” The Aligned with Source workshop happens Saturday morning, and The Kennedys—Pete and Maura—are back Saturday night with their acoustic folk pop show. In New Haven, Café Nine’s Manic Mondays headlines
Kosha Dillz, appearing with Old Self, See All Hues, and Fet/ki. On Tuesday it’s
Christian Death and Witch Hair. Wednesday’s offerings are Shake ‘n’ Vibrate,
and Ryxno. You can hear Bill Kirchen and Dan Liparini on Thursday. Friday’s
Happy Hour features Burning Sensations, followed by the late show with the Kurt
Baker Combo, Kris Rodgers & The Dirty Gems, and Jacques LeCoque. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike
Coppola and Friends, and the late show’s got Fiction, O’K and the Night Crew,
and Ditch Boys. The Sunday Buzz Matinee headlines Fred Eaglesmith & Tif Ginn,
and they round out the weekend in the evening with Terrance Simien & Zydeco

Toad’s Place in New Haven hosts its usual Night of
Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence & Friends tonight. It’s a Battle of the
Bands on Thursday with Audio Contraband, Carried by VI, and much more. They’ve
got a 20th anniversary CD Release Party on Friday with The Breakfast, who are there with Creamery Station. They headline Eden on Sunday night,

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s it’s Jazz
Mondays tonight with the Nathan Edwards Quintet. Michael Palin’s Orchestra
plays jazz, R&B, and soul classics on Tuesday. The Community Blues Jam
happens every Wednesday, and on Thursday it’s Liviu’s Jazz Invitational with
special guests. Ryan Hartt & The Blue Hearts take the stage on Friday, and
on Saturday it’s a doubleheader with Carl Ricci & 706 Union along with Neal

At the Russell Library in Middletown, they’re
screening “Young Frankenstein” tonight at 6 pm to celebrate the Bicentennial of
Mary Shelly’s “Frankenstein. You can still make it! The Tobacco Cessation
Workshop happens Tuesday at 10:30 am; registration is required. There’s a
Career Program Workshop in the evening at 6 pm, “Interpersonal Communication in
a Digital World,” and the Classic Mystery Book group meets at 7 pm. The CT Data Collaborative holds a Data Basics Workshop
Wednesday morning, and Scrabble is on board at 5 pm. The Connecticut Poetry
Society meets at 6:30 pm. Enjoy music and stories of Italy Thursday at 6:30 pm
when the library hosts Italycious with Enzo Bocarino. There’s an Introduction
to Microsoft Word workshop Friday morning, and at 6 pm there’s an opening
reception for the new art exhibit, New Land, New Art, a collection of works by
immigrants. They hold a First Friday Bookclub offsite event at 7 pm at RaMa
LuNa Center for Yoga to discuss “Small Great Things” by Jodi Picoult. Check

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts
in Middletown invites you to free Graduate Recitals Tuesday at 8 pm and Friday

with Kiumi Kamanishi and Stephen Morrell at the Mansfield Freeman Center at 2

Kids. They’ve got The Dodos and Palehound on Saturday, and they finish out the
week on Sunday with Ghost of Paul Revere and Charlie Parr. At the College

First Church in Middletown
invites you to its renewed sanctuary for the Concert & Blessing of Our
City, on Sunday, November 4, at 4pm. The event celebrates the 350th anniversary
of First Church. All are welcome!

McQuillan’s VOICES OF OUR ANCESTORS, a tribute to First Church and its history
in Middletown; with Julius P. Williams, president elect of the (US) Conductors
Guild, conducting a chamber orchestra, and First Church combined choirs and
bell choir, conducted by Shari Lucas,
minister of music and organist for the performance. The Rev. Julia H.
Burkey will preside, and the Trevor Davis Dixieland Jazz Band also will

Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues the run of “Liyana,”
an animated hero’s journey of perseverance, and “The Great Buster: A
Celebration,” a documentary about Buster Keaton. Also continuing is “The Wife,”
a drama of fame and marriage. On Friday they open “The Border,” a supernatural
romantic thriller about a border guard with a special superpower. Check the

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford screens National Theatre Live ‘s production of “Frankenstein” tonight at 7 pm. Tomorrow they open “Bad Reputation,” a celebration of punk rocker Joan Jett. It runs through Thursday. “Crazy Rich Asians” opens on Friday, and on Saturday there’s a one-time showing of “Matangi/Maya/M.I.A.,” a film about the Tamil activist and Superbowl hip-hop artist. The 10th annual
Middletown International Film Festival concludes Tuesday with a screening of “Amerika
Square,” at 7 pm at the Russell Library. Two differing friends meet in
Athens because of the refugee crisis. And Artists for World Peace hosts its
annual Halloween movie/music night Tuesday at 7:30 at the DeKoven House in
Middletown. This year’s selection is the 1920 classic “The Cabinet of Dr.
