Good evening, it’s Friday, October 5th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Story City Troupe returns to the Buttonwood stage this evening. The Aligned with Source workshop happens Saturday morning, and in the evening, they present jazz with the piano/flute duo of Lazlo Gardony and Christian Artmann. The Matisse Jazz Project performs Sunday nifhr. The Rosie Warren art exhibit runs through the month.  www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven tonight, Café Nine’s Happy Hour features The Incorrigibles, and Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is Mike Coppola and Friends. Saturday’s late show brings you MDC, The Elected Officials, and The Deacons. The Sunday Buzz Matinee hosts John D’Amato, and they round out the weekend in the evening with the George Lesiw Band.  http://www.cafenine.com/  

At Toad’s Place in New Haven it’s a West End Blend Album Release Party tonight, along with performances by Bella’s Bartok and No Mind. www.toadsplace.com

The Russell Library in Middletown holds The First Friday Book Club offsite at the RaMa LuNa Center for Yoga at 7 pm to discuss “I Liked My Life” by Abby Fabiashi. There’s live jazz at the Spectra Wired Café on this evening at 5:30 pm and The Nick Di Maria Quartet performs at the Hanging Hills Brewing Company at 7 pm. On Sunday the open reading series Syllable continues at Little River Restoratives in Hartford at 7 pm. www.hartford.com/events/

 Manic Presents it’s Start Making Sense with their Talking Heads Tribute tonight. Saturday’s headliner is Dressy Bessy, appearing with The Foresters. On Sunday, it’s a Todd Rogers Benefit featuring The Pist, World Games, The Redactions, and more. www.manicpresents.com

Infinity Hall in Hartford presents you Eaglemania tonight, the world’s greatest Eagles tribute band. Enjoy blues and pop on Saturday during An Evening with Madeleine Peyroux.  On Sunday, it’s folk rock with Sun Parade, The Penniless Wild, and Moon Matrix. www.infinityhall.com

The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown invites you to trans actor Becca Blackwelll’s one-person show, They, Themselves and Schmerm, tonight at 10 pm at World Music Hall. There’s a free guided tour for the Kahlil Robert Irving Exhibition on Saturday at 1 pm at the Zilkha Gallery. A free concert of This Is It! Cherry Street Station hosts the Return of Green Jello this evening at 7 pm, with performances by Flapjack Attack, Goat Herder, and Over the Line. You can catch Dark Ritual, Denim Panther, and Arcadia Forsaken on Saturday. They’re holding their second Flea Market and Swap Meet Sunday beginning at 1 pm with live music, a raffle, and more. The Mac 650 Gallery & Artist Co-Op in Middletown brings you Death Bells, Narrow Head, Reduction Plan, and Pleasure Beach on Friday at 7 pm. Middletown Recreation & Community Services sponsors a Recycled/Upcycled Sketchbooks event Saturday at 1 pm at the Senior Center in Middletown. Artists for World Peace and the Eastern Pequot Tribal Nation hold a free Native Eye Clinic for local natives and their families Saturday and Sunday in Norwich. The Middlesex Music Academy in Middletown invites you to their monthly 4 Chord Fiesta Saturday at 4 pm at their Main St. location. The only rule for the jam is a four-chord structure.

The Middlesex County Historical Society holds its 33rd annual Car Show and Flea Market Sunday starting at 8:30 am at Palmer Field in Middletown where they highlight a 1949 Ford Custom Convertible. And Middletown’s Recreation & Community Services hosts a Pumpkin Decorating Event Sunday at 9:30 am at Crystal Lake. The Connecticut Wood Carvers Association holds its monthly meeting Sunday at 10 am at the Forest & Park Association Building in Middlefield. WESU’s DJ Lord Lewis, the Velvet Knight and host of the Rumpus Room, invites you to a Chllin’ BBQ Sunday at 4 pm at Conspiracy on Main St. in Middletown.   www.facebook.com/CityArtsOffice 

It’s Free First Saturday at the Connecticut Historical Society in Hartford, where you can tour their ongoing exhibit Facing War: Connecticut in World War I. www.chs.org

Oddfellows Playhouse Youth Theater in Middletown holds a Teen Talent Search Saturday at 7 pm that includes cash prizes. Details at www.oddfellows.org.

Night Fall, an outdoor community performance celebrating seasonal change, happens Saturday at 6 pm in Pope Park in Hartford. Enjoy art, music, dance, and the giant puppets of artist Anne Cubberly. www.popepark.org

Fair season continues with the annual Portland Fair happening Friday through Sunday. Enjoy the midway, the animals, a petting zoo, and more. You can catch a performance by Jamie’s Junk Show on Friday night, and Dust Hat, Jeff Pitchell, or 8 to the Bar on Saturday. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways openings tonight include “Museo,” about a museum heist in Mexico City, and “Rodents of Unusual Size,” a documentary about swamp rats in Louisiana, which includes a post-film discussion with Director Jeff Springer at Friday’s screening. Also opening is “I Am Not a Witch,” a fable about a Zambian girl accused of witchcraft. On Sunday there’s a one-time screening of “Shot,” a film about gun violence, with a post film discussion with representatives from Unload, and For Freedoms. Trinity College’s Cinestudio is running “Three Identical Strangers,” about the reunion of identical triplets separated at birth. The Japanese film “The Third Murder” opens on Sunday. Check the website for all offerings and times.  http://www.cinestudio.org/

Right after the jive at Five  stick around for Wild Wild Live! With Babe and Beth. That Wesleyan music scene.

At 6:30, it’s the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity, and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

from 7-8:30 it’s the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T – a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, r&b, latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

8:30-10 feature Grand Central Station (1.3.5) with DJ Jeny Doll – travel back in time to the 1940s and 50s with a swinging upbeat show filled with big band jazz, swing, and rockabilly, and some new releases.

Until 11:30, DJ Cocomotion and the Music Mixologist present Strictly Off the Head. A live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, no pre planned playlist mixes or blends. R&B, old school, hip hop, rap, and house.

from 11:30-12:30 it’s an A and a B with DJ N. Every band has its hits – and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30 -3 we have OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott. Praising God with the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

Rounding out the night from 3-5 am it’s Louisiana Barn dance with classic country, western swing, hillbilly, rockabilly, and Americana music.
