Good evening, it's Wednesday, November 27th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

In Middletown on Saturday evening, The Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore holds their monthly Philosophy Night. Kids’ events continue this week including a special Story Time with Janet Lawler. There’s a Teen NaNoWri Mo session on Wednesday at 6 pm. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

This evening at 5pm in Middletown, The Russell Library hosts Scrabble Wednesday before the holiday. On Saturday morning, Councilman Phil Pessina presents a read-aloud of “The Polar Express.” Consult the website calendar for more events, including sessions for those who are home-insecure, geared to patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight/Wednesday it's the return of Dean Falcone’s annual Vomitorium #23. Friday’s Happy Hour features the Harris Brothers Balkan Band, followed by a 10-year reunion show with Colvin, Over the Line, and Bad Lieutenants. Saturday’s afternoon Jazz Jam session is with Billy Cofrances, and Saturday evening its Shake ‘N’ Vibrate with DJ B the T Jr. You can catch Eric Nassau, Keith Carini, and George Morgio at the Café Nine Sunday Buzz Matinée, and they round out the holiday weekend with the Mark Dipino Band, Hi-Fi Radio, and Cody Bondra on stage Sunday night. www.cafenine.com

At The State House in New Haven, there’s a Homecoming Back Room Party this evening/ Wednesday with Dooley-O spinning hip-hop, funk, and more. Gypsy rock, circus punk and more take the stage on Friday with the return of Bella’s Bartok, performing along with Sean Henry at The State House. On Saturday, Creamery Station, the John Spignesi Band, and Friends of a Feather take the stage. They’re offering a Canadian hardcore matinée on Sunday with No Warning, Year of the Knife, Blind Justice, and more. www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it's the Wednesday Community Blues Jam hosted by Tim McDonald. Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez return with rock and soul on Friday, and on Saturday it’s R&B, rock, soul and more with Jeff Pitchell and Texas Flood. On Sunday they bring you Southern Fried Sass, a Drag Brunch Eggsperience with Nedra Belle. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Infinity Hall Hartford brings you blues and rock this evening/Wednesday with Jeff Pevar and Scott Murawski’s “Guitarness.” You can hear more of the same on Friday with Quinn Sullivan, and on Saturday Beau Bolero takes the stage with their Steely Dan tribute.
Infinity Norfolk brings you the Lespecial trio tonight/ Wednesday with two sets: acoustic and electric. They’re hosting a Thanksgiving Buffet on Thursday, and on Saturday you can catch Tusk: A Fleetwood Mac Experience. Singer/songwriter Martin Sexton is in the house on Sunday with Americana, folk, and more. www.infinityhall.com

Toad’s Place presents an Emo Night Thanksgiving Bash tonight/Wednesday with Hunter Moran and Tom Cat. It’s their 10th anniversary Black Friday show this week with Jarren Benton, Lock Smith, Spose, and Mike Squires. Spring Heeled Jack USA is in the house Saturday to celebrate the 21st anniversary of “Song from Surburbia,” appearing with Pilfers, Tip the Van, and The Scotch Bonneets . www.toadsplace.com

Friday at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, you can catch Amsterdam’s Saskia Laroo and her jam group celebrating their new record release, “Trumpets Around the World.”
The Aligned with Source Workshop is on for Saturday morning, and Saturday evening it’s Americana and folk with singer/songwriters Lisa Bastoni and Naomi Sommers. On Sunday afternoon, John Basinger presents Book XII (12) of Milton’s Paradise Lost, and in the evening the Slambovian Underground is in the house to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Buttonwood’s founding. www.buttonwood.org

Manic Presents brings Vintage Trouble and Hollis Brown to the Space Ballroom in Hamden, on Friday, and on Sunday you can catch Presence CT with their Led Zeppelin tribute. www.manicpresents.com


At the Arch Street Tavern, You can chat about your art or technology projects and take a tour at the Make Hartford Open House this evening/ Wednesday.
It’s Karaoke Night at The Russell tonight/
Wednesday.
The Wadsworth Atheneum opens their 46th annual Festival of Trees & Traditions on Friday morning where you can view specially decorated trees, purchase a tree or wreath, and shop for holiday items, with proceeds benefitting museum programs. Winterfest Hartford also opens Friday morning at Bushnell Park where you can skate for free seven days a week. The Hanging Hills Brewing Company sponsors a Barrelled and Dark Bear Festival Friday evening, and the Nick Di Maria Quartet will be in the house. The Mark Twain House continues Graveyard Shift Ghost Tours over the weekend, and Sensual Salsa Saturdays takes place at the Red Rock Tavern. The Arch Street Tavern hosts Lespecial with Tales of Joy on Saturday evening as well, and on Sunday afternoon you can enjoy a Victorian Holiday Tea at the Isham-Terry House. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces that the Wesleyan Potters 64th annual exhibit and sale opens Friday and features live music by the Sawtelles. A portion of proceeds will benefit the work of Gilead Community Services.  The City of Middletown 34th annual Holiday on Main Street series of events starts on Friday and Saturday with tree lightings, wagon rides, free photos with Santa, and more. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways is showing “Parasite,” a pitch-black modern Korean fairytale, “Pain and Glory,” about a film director’s reencounters in his declining years, and “Downton Abbey,” the movie version, through tonight/ Wednesday. Also this evening/ Wednesday, they open “The Irishman,” Martin Scorsese’s epic saga of organized crime in post-war America. Details and screening times at www.realartways.org

Starting tonight/Wednesday Trinity College's Cinestudio, opens the “The Irishman.” Sunday’s National Theatre Live matinée is Noel Coward’s “Present Laughter,” and in the evening they open “Pain and Glory.” Details at www.cinestudio.org

Here's the rundown of tonight’s lineup here on WESU 88.1 FM Middletown:
Right after The Jive at Five, stick around for an hour of latin music from the 80’s, 90’s, and early 2000’s with Isabel Calione, to hear all different kinds of music from the latin world!

Next up at 6pm, stay tuned for a half hour of Growing Greener with Tom Christopher, featuring weekly interviews with the leading experts on working in partnership with Nature in the garden, some important stuff right there.

From 6:30-8 pm tune in for Fusion Radio with James Fusion featuring the original and still the best damn Techno mix on Radio.

From 8-9:30 pm stay tuned for ‘The Warehouse’ with Mike Nyce where you can hear the best in underground house music mixed live for all your listening pleasures.

At the half hour mark from 9:30 to 10 PM, stay tuned for Look What I Made, a program about various creator’s on Wesleyan’s campus, in which students talk about themselves and their creations.

from 10-11pm It’s Windy City Sounds with MC Carthy and Moore Life bringing you An episodic look at different eras and genres of the Chicago music scene, featuring discussion of the artists and songs from two Chicago natives.

Following at 11pm Splitting Hairs, A humorous musical discussion show dedicated to analyzing the lyrics of popular songs, and finding their inconsistencies and comical meanings.

from midnight-1am Maximum Rock and Roll Radio from Pacifica, Featuring the best in DIY punk, garage, and hardcore rock and roll.

For a 2 hour slot from 1 am to 3 am Noize in the Attic, Where Your Past Comes Back To Haunt You. Serving Connecticut it’s hard rock fix of classic Heavy Metal as well as the latest from the genre!

at 3am third shift listeners can catch an encore presentation of our noontime broadcast of Democracy Now!
At 4am we kick of four daytime public affairs block with the BBC World Report followed by morning edition from NPR at 5.
