Good evening, it's Friday, November 29th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

In Middletown, tomorrow evening, the Wesleyan RJ Julia bookstore hosts it’s their monthly Philosophy Night. www.wesleyanrjjulia.com

At the Russell Library tomorrow morning, Councilman Phil Pessina presents a read-aloud of “The Polar Express.” Consult the website calendar for more events, including sessions for those who are home-insecure, geared to patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight’s Happy Hour features the Harris Brothers Balkan Band, followed by a 10-year reunion show with Colvin, Over the Line, and Bad Lieutenants. Tomorrow's afternoon Jazz Jam session is with Billy Cofrances, and tomorrow evening its Shake ‘N’ Vibrate with DJ B the T Jr. You can catch Eric Nassau, Keith Carini, and George Morgio at the Café Nine Sunday Buzz Matinée, and they round out the holiday weekend with the Mark Dipino Band, Hi-Fi Radio, and Cody Bondra on stage Sunday night. www.cafenine.com


The State House in New Haven Gypsy rock, circus punk and more take the stage tonight  with the return of Bella’s Bartok, performing along with Sean Henry at The State House. Tomorrow,Creamery Station, the John Spignesi Band, and Friends of a Feather take the stage. They’re offering a Canadian hardcore matinée on Sunday with No Warning, Year of the Knife, Blind Justice, and more. www.statehousepresents.com

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, Christine Ohlman and Rebel Montez return with rock and soul tonight, and tomorrow it’s R&B, rock, soul and more with Jeff Pitchell and Texas Flood. Infinity Hall Hartford brings you Quinn Sullivan tonight, and tomorrowBeau Bolero takes the stage with their Steely Dan tribute. Infinity Norfolk brings you Tusk: A Fleetwood Mac Experience tomorrow. Toad’s Place It’s their 10th anniversary Black Friday show tonight with Jarren Benton, Lock Smith, Spose, and Mike Squires. Tonight at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, you can catch Amsterdam’s Saskia Laroo and her jam group celebrating their new record release, “Trumpets Around the World.” The Aligned with Source Workshop is on for tomorrow morning, and tomorrow  evening it’s Americana and folk with singer/songwriters Lisa Bastoni and Naomi Sommers. On Sunday afternoon, John Basinger presents Book XII (12) of Milton’s Paradise Lost, and in the evening the Slambovian Underground is in the house to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Buttonwood’s founding. www.buttonwood.org

Manic Presents brings Vintage Trouble and Hollis Brown to the Space Ballroom in Hamden, tonight, and on Sunday you can catch Presence CT with their Led Zeppelin tribute. www.manicpresents.com


The Wadsworth Atheneum opened their 46th annual Festival of Trees & Traditions this morning where you can view specially decorated trees, purchase a tree or wreath, and shop for holiday items, with proceeds benefiting museum programs. Winterfest Hartford also opened this morning at Bushnell Park where you can skate for free seven days a week. The Hanging Hills Brewing Company sponsors a Barrelled and Dark Bear Festival this evening, and the Nick Di Maria Quartet will be in the house. The Mark Twain House continues Graveyard Shift Ghost Tours over the weekend, and Sensual Salsa Saturdays takes place tomorrow at the Red Rock Tavern. The Arch Street Tavern hosts Lespecial with Tales of Joy tomorrow evening as well, and on Sunday afternoon you can enjoy a Victorian Holiday Tea at the Isham-Terry House. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces that the Wesleyan Potters 64th annual exhibit and sale opened today  and the opening event this evening features live music by the Sawtelles. A portion of proceeds will benefit the work of Gilead Community Services.  The City of Middletown 34th annual Holiday on Main Street series of events started today and continues Saturday with tree lightings, wagon rides, free photos with Santa, and more. From 10-11pm (1,3,5) Train to Skaville with Brian Tomsic from Pacifica presents deep cuts from his collection of popular Jamaican music of the 60s and 70s.


At 11pm Mentaltown with The Ultimate Emcee El Vee brings you Unsigned Local Hip Hop.


at midnight, permanent Collection with Chris presents an hour of Non-toxic creative radio.


from 1:30-3am OVERDRIVE with Clarence and Shantay Scott present a unique mix of urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music!


from 3-5am Back Down the Bayou with Bill Boelens is an eclectic Louisiana roots music show from the Banana Plantation in Baton Rouge.


And finally, from 5-6am the BBC World Report offers International news coverage.
