Here in Middletown, Simple Tai Chi with Mike McEwen and Laughter Yoga happen Wednesday evenings and Thursdays at noon at the Buttonwood Tree. The Middlesex Drum Circle meets Thursday night. Enjoy interactive comedy on Saturday night with FOCUS Teen Improv. The Aligned with Source Workshop comes your way Saturday morning, and in the evening, the Mattabesset String Collective takes the stage with blues, folk, and more. Part One of the Level 1 Reiki class will take place on Sunday, and the #Balance for Better Women’s Art Show continues through the month. www.buttonwood.org
In New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, it’s The Culture Showcase with Puma Simone, DrizzDaGod, Allen Blazze, and more. Wednesday’s headliners are Monoculture, and Elison Jackson. It’s 120 Minutes of College Radio: A Tribute to the 1980’s Underground, on Thursday. Friday’s Happy Hour features Bronson Rock, and the late show brings you DBUK, and Norman Westberg. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Thomas Ice, followed by by a triple tribute show with Straight to Hell, Bollocks, and The Hymans. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s this evening, Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more on Tuesday. Wednesday’s community Blues Jam features Tim McDonald, and it’s Liviu’s Invitationall on Thursday with special guests. Enjoy blues party music on Friday with Johnny Marion & Blueshead, and Gary Hoey is in the house on Saturday with originals and rock covers. The Russell Library in Middletown holds a Career Program Workshop tonight, Get Out in Front of Your Computer and Get a Job. Also, the Classic Mystery Book Discussion group meets at 7 pm. Scrabble Wednesday is at 5 pm, along with Family Game Night, and the CT Poetry Society meets at 6 pm. There’s an original play reading debut Thursday, presenting “Maiden Matron Crone Masterpiece,” a work about the goddess archetype. The Veterans’ Writing Group meets offsite at the Acton Public Library for a panel discussion. A Make Time for Making Workshop happens Friday morning, and there’s a Container Garden Workshop for Families on Saturday, and on Sunday they kick off Money Smart Week on Sunday with a presentation on finding low cost rentals in the Middletown area. Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts in Middletown announces free events this week, starting with Graduate Recitals in Memorial Hall Tonight and Thursday and Saturday evenings. Week One of the Senior Thesis art exhibition begins Wednesday at the Zilkha Gallery with a reception at 4 pm. Their Taiko Drumming Ensemble presents a Taiko Showcase Wednesday at World Music Hall. There’s a Senior Recital Saturday at World Music Hall, and on Sunday you can hear This Is It! The Complete Piano Works of Neely Bruce: Part XVII at Crowell Concert Hall. You’re invited to purchase tickets to the Sprint Senior Thesis Dance Concerts happening Thursday through Saturday. Hartford Underground holds swing dance lessons Wednesday and Thursday at two locations. The 14th Annual Trinity International Hip-Hop Festival happens Thursday through Saturday at Trinity College. Rusty Williams takes the stage at the Hog River Brewing Company on Thursday, and the Nick Di Maria Quartet is in the house on Friday. The Hartford Flavor Company offers live music by local bands Friday night. And the KingPorter BAM BAND is featured at this Sunday’s Baby Grand Jazz at the Hartford Public Library. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts Susanne Davis this evening, author of “The Appointed Hour,” a book of interconnected stories. There’s a Chalk Painting Workshop Thursday at the Mezzo Grille, and the Rockfall Foundation hosts a hike on Beseck Mountain in Middlefield Saturday morning. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Cielo,” a cosmic meditation on the night sky in Chile, and “CatVideoFest 2019,” this year’s collection of the latest and best cat videos. Also continuing is “The Sower,” a French historical drama about desperate love in revolutionary times, and “I Am Cuba,” a newly-restored documentary about post WWII Communism and Latin sensuality. There’s a one-time screening of “Jimi Hendrix: Electric Church,” on Thursday, that includes his historic 1970 Atlanta concert. On Friday they open “3 Faces,” an Iranian film about a provincial girl studying drama, and “Woman at War,” a film about an environmental activist fighting the aluminum industry. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Never Look Away,” a German film about young lovers connected by a family secret, through Wednesday. On Friday and Saturday they’re screening “Free Solo,” a documentary about the first man to climb El Capitan without ropes. From 2-3am (2, 4), tune in for Cover to Cover with Evelyn and Margalit. Albums selected from WESU’s vast collection played and analyzed through thought provoking discussion in the context of their creation and influences.
From 3-4am, it’s Up Front Soul.
And finally, rounding out the night from 4-5am is the BBC World Report offering International news coverage and we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
