Fri 3-22-19 Jive

Good evening, it's Friday, March 22nd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming. 

I'm Leith Johnson, host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday of the month at 4pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across the musical genres. I hope you'll tune in!

Here in Middletown, at The Russell Library you can Swap Your Stuff: Crafter Style at the Library tomorrow morning. www.russelllibrary.org 

Also here in Middletown, this evening at The Buttonwood Tree presents an Evening of Classic Rock with The Modern Riffs. The weekly Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and performers of all levels are invited to a Music Workshop at The Buttonwood Tree Saturday afternoon with Rob DeSorbo. The group 4 States of Jazz takes the Buttonwood tree stage Saturday night, and on Sunday there’s a Level 2 Reiki Training with certification. The #Balance for Better Women’s Art Show runs throughout March. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, Café Nine's Happy Hour performance features Jordan Giangreco starting right about now, and tonight's late show spotlights Future Punx, Pleasure Beat, and Glambat. Cafe Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Billy Cofrances, followed by the Saturday night main event featuring Alethea, Laundry Day, ditch boys, and more. The Sunday Buzz Matinée features The Alpaca Gnomes and Among The Acres, and Café Nine rounds out the evening with Shank ‘n’ Vibrate Sunday night. www.cafenine.com/ 

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, you can enjoy rock, funk, and more tonight with the Michael Cleary Band. Saturday night, Locomotion is in the house at Sally’s. On Sunday, you’re invited to the CT Blues Society’s Annual Band Challenge, starting at 3 pm. www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Tonight, the Statehouse welcomes Mauritanian famed musician Noura Mint Seymali and her band for a night of west African music featuring voice and psychedelic guitar.  Roots reggae artist Prince Royal opens the show. On Saturday, Statehouse debuts their first Pass The Mic hip-hop competition. www.statehousepresents.com

The Hartford Flavor Company brings you live music with Ysanne in their Friday Night Flavor series. They host The Great Hartford Story Slam on Saturday. Christ Church Cathedral hosts “The Curve,” with Iraqi musician and composer Ameen Mokdad tonight, performing with the string quartet in residence with Cuatro Puntos. The annual Connecticut Spring Show with antique and decorative arts takes place at the Connecticut State Armory on Saturday and Sunday.  The Hartford Library sponsors a writing center with free advice by UConn consultants on Saturday, and on Sunday at 3 pm, in the Baby Grand Jazz series, the Mary DiPaola Trio performs.  Full details at www.hartford.com/events

Friday Manic Presents brings Whindersson Nunes to the College St Music Hall in New Haven and on Saturday you can catch José González & The String Theory at College St. At the Space Ballroom in Hamden Saturday, Manic presents a night of hardcore rock with Into Another, Beyond, and Death Ray Vision. At the Wall Street Theater in Norwalk, they bring you The Music of Cream featuring Kofi Baker and Malcolm Johns on Saturday. www.manicpresents.com

Tonight, Toad's Place brings you Matisyahu. On Saturday, there’s another Original Saturday College Dance Party, and on Sunday Toad’s brings you As I Lay Dying, Phinehas, and Currents. www.toadsplace.com

The Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces that the Shoreline Arts Alliance presents IMAGES 2019, the oldest jury-curated photography competition in Connecticut is open. There’s an Artists’ Reception tonight, and the exhibit runs through April 6th. The 7th Annual CT World Water Day Art Show and Fundraiser happens at the MAC650 Gallery and Artist Co-op on Saturday. Oddfellow’s Playhouse in Middletown announces “Circus Botanicus,” an original circus-theater piece about the secret life of plants, with performances tonight through Sunday. Tonight is a “pay-what-you-can” preview. And there’s an opening reception right about now the new art exhibit by Ada Varszegi, which runs through April. www.oddfellows.org


The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts Family Story Time Saturday morning. And on Sunday, they host Stephen Spignesi, presenting “Stephen King, American Master: A creepy Corpus of Facts About Stephen King & His Work.” www.wesleyanrjjulia.com


Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you Americana troubadour and songwriter Robert Earl Keen on Saturday. On Sunday they’ve got Mark Broussard, appearing with Drew Angus. Infinity Norfolk offers R& B, and soul on tonight with Kat Wright. They’ve got alternative country and roots on Saturday with Reckless Kelly at Infinity Norfolk. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Cielo,” a cosmic meditation on the night sky in Chile, “CatVideoFest 2019,” this year’s collection of the latest and best cat videos, “The Sower,” a French historical drama about desperate love in revolutionary times. Also opening is “I Am Cuba,” a newly-restored documentary about post WWII Communism and Latin sensuality. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org


At Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford, today through Saturday they’ll screen “On the Basis of Sex,” a biopic of Ruth Bader Ginsburg.  On Sunday they’ll open “Never Look Away,” a German film about young lovers connected by a family secret.  Full details and screening times will be at www.cinestudio.org

The Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T, who offers a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

From 8:30-10 pm it's Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, inviting you to travel back in time to the 1940's and 1950's with an upbeat show filled with big band, jazz, swing, and rockabilly.

At 10, stay tuned for Chris M’s Permanent Collection, for some creative, non-toxic radio.

At 12:30 am, Clarence and the Real Shantay bring you 2 1/2 hours of Christian hip hop and R&B.

From 3-4 am, it's Back Down the Bayou from Pacifica, and the BBC world report comes your way at 5 am.

Saturday mornings, we bring a touch of the Irish from 6-7 am on The Celtic Café, followed by Café Italia with Francesco Fiumara from 7-8 right before Weekend Edition Saturday at 8 am.
