Here in Middletown, at The Buttonwood Tree , tonight they bring you Shaking the Tree, a Gong and Sound Meditation. You’re invited to celebrate singer/songwriter Ashley Hamel’s CD release party and Open Jam on Friday for the release of her new wizard rock concept album. Patrons are encouraged to dress as a witch or wizard! There’s a Teen Open Mic at The Buttonwood Tree on Saturday afternoon. Saturday evening brings the 14th annual Composers and Improvisors Festival featuring Joe Fonda, Kevin Norton, and Taylor Ho Bynum. In New Haven, tonight at Café Nine, Fiction Kids, and SAP are on the ticket for Thursday at Café Nine. The Friday 5pm Happy Hour showcase features Vangie Durst, Lydia Arachnes, and Semaphora. The Friday night main event at The features Wolf Harbor, Flight of Silence, and Dizzie Pocket. Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends. Saturday night’s main event features Joey Wit and the Definition, Pale Space, and Auguste & Alden. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s,Thursday night at Café nine, it’s Liviu’s International with special guests. Stax of Soul, a band dedicated to the music and artists of the Stax record label, takes the stage Friday night. The Russell Library in Middletown Thursday the Job and Career Center offers Practice Interviews with Craig Stowell starting at noon. Teens are invited to a Dear Martin session Friday afternoon where they can write a letter to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The library will be closed Sunday and Monday for the King holiday. The Connecticut Science Center in Hartford invites you to enjoy the Sock Skating Rink open daily throughout the month. Tim McDonald plays blues on Thursday at the Spectra Wired Café starting at 5 pm. Enjoy more blues at 7 pm with Ramblin’ Dan Stevens at the Hog River Brewing Company. Hartford Underground offers a Swing Dance session at the Polish National Home of Hartford Thursday at 8 pm. Little River Restoratives hosts an Off the Record Indie Night Thursday at 9:30 pm. The Hartford Ballroom holds a Dance Social Friday at 8 pm for dancers of all levels. Toad’s Place hosts a Rockin’ in a Winter Wonderland special on Thursday with performers on the Main Stage and Lilly’s Pad, including Auguste and Alden, Baystate, Bond Villian, Dandelyin, and much more. The Prezence, a tribute to Led Zeppelin, takes the stage on Friday along with Savile Row. On Saturday they headline Legion of Jerry, appearing with EGGY and Dead Show. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office presents T-Rextasy, Sit-take, Two Headed Girl, and Polkadogs performing at the MAC 650 Gallery & Co-Op on Thursday evening. There’s a Family Fun Night Friday at 6 pm at the Woodrow Wilson Middle School with food, bounce houses, balloon artists, music and more. The City Recreation Division hosts a Royal Tea Party for kids Saturday at 10 am, and there’s a Cupcakes Cookies and Canvasses paint event at 10:30 am. Oddfellow’s Playhouse hosts a Teen Talent Search Saturday at 7 pm. There are cash prizes. And the Skating Rink in Harbor Park is open on weekends. Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Shoplifters,” a Golden Globe-nominated Japanese film about a family of thieves and an abandoned child, through Thursday. On Friday they open “Genesis 2.0,” a film about efforts to bring the long-extinct woolly mammoth back to life. You’re invited to a free Community Film Screening next Monday in celebration of Martin Luther King Day. They offer three documentaries on the civil rights movement starting at 11 am. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford, Thursday they open “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” starring Melissa McCarthy as a fading celebrity biographer who slips into deception and forgery. The Sunday matinée Bolshoi Ballet selection is “La Bayadere,” and they open “The Hate U Give,” about a poor black girl attending a mostly white prep school, on Sunday, too. The Tisane Euro-Asian Café hosts an LGBTQ Movie Night Thursday at 11 pm at their Hartford location. And the Wadsworth Atheneum is screening “From the Heart: The Paul Butterfield Story,” Friday at 7 pm. It’s a documentary about the life of this legendary blues harmonica player. Christ Church Cathedral in Hartford hosts a Night Fall movie event Saturday at 6 pm.
