Monday 1-28-19 Jive


Good evening, it's Monday, January 28th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

I'm Leith Johnson, Host of The Light Fandango, heard every 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sunday at 4pm, where you'll hear uncommon songs of the 1960s and 70s from across genres. I hope you'll tune in.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, The Buttonwood Tree holds its Open Mic & Moments of Gratitude tonight hosted by Paul Bozzi and Bill Katz. On Friday, the Story City Troupe returns to regale you with stories themed around “An Ah-Ha Moment.”  The Aligned With Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and in the evening the acoustic ensemble group Django’s Reserve is in the house to bring you Gypsy jazz and more.

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Manic Monday brings you Ava Mendoza, appearing with Headroom and T-Wreck. Tuesday’s headliners are The Quest, and Jarick Giles. It’s another session of Words & Music on Wednesday at the Café. On Thursday you can enjoy Robert Gordon, and The Tommy’s. The Friday Happy Hour features Sean Colon, and the late show has The Let Loose, Art of Huckleberry, and Southwind Social Club. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Mike Coppola and Friends, followed by the evening show with Gutter Demons and Diablogato. Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it’s Jazz Mondays tonight, celebrating the Haneef N. Nelson Birthday Bash. On Tuesday Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra brings you jazz, R&B, soul classics, and more. Wednesday’s community Blues Jam features Tim McDonald, and it’s Liviu’s International on Thursday with special guests. Rock Solid Alibi takes the stage on Friday night to bring you straight-up rock n’ roll. Blues and soul come your way on Saturday with the Slam Allen Band. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/ 

The Russell Library in Middletown holds a Classic Mystery Book Discussion event Tuesday evening, to talk about “Night Train to Memphis.” They’ve got their usual Scrabble session Wednesday at 5 pm, and on Thursday evening there’s a Teen Volunteer Orientation session. It’s the First Fridays Book Discussion this week, happening offsite at the RaMa Luna Center for Yoga and Wellbeing. This month’s selection is “Super Better” by Jane McGonigal. Mindfulness Meditation happens Saturday morning, and Rex the Dinobrarian will be in the lobby to celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day. The Wesleyan Center for the Arts in Middletown sponsors an Opening Reception for the exhibit, “Audible Bacillus,” Tuesday at the Zilkha Gallery. On Thursday, there’s an Opening Reception at the East Asian Studies Gallery for “Sound of Korea,” with video and photographs by artist Young-Il Kim. There’s a free Gided Exhibition Tour on Saturday at the Zilkha Gallery for the ongoing exhibit, and on Sunday Elite Syncopation performs “The Jazz Age Begins,” with historic American Music works, at The Russell House. How Bazaar in Hartford invites you to visit Marquee, a temporary boutique featuring products by local artisans, open Tuesday through Saturday this week at their Whitney Street location. Charlie Fisher is at Spectra Wired Café Thursday starting at 5 pm. The Hanging Hills Brewery invites you to experience The Forest Room on Thursday; it’s a music project with sonic vision. Or enjoy a performance by Gentle Temper at the Hog River Brewing Company. Little River Restoratives hosts an Off the Record Indie Night Thursday at 9:30 pm. The Polish National Home in Hartford holds a night of comedy with Pierogies & Punchlines Friday at 7 pm. And the Sarah Rose Trio performs at Hanging Hills on Friday, along with Frank Brocklehurst & Blessings Divine. The Connecticut Historical Society sponsors a Valentines & Love Letters kids’ event on Saturday at 10 am. The Sam Newsome Quartet performs at the Hartford Public Library on Sunday at 3 pm in their ongoing Baby Grand Jazz series. The Connecticut Science Center in Hartford invites you to enjoy the Sock Skating Rink open daily throughout the month Full details at www.hartford.com/events/

Manic Presents is at the Space Ballroom in Hamden on Wednesday with Dustbowl Revival and Roanoke. At the College Street Music Hall in New Haven, they bring you Umphrey’s McGee and Robert Walter’s 20th Congress on Thursday. Middletown Arts & Culture Office announces that the Spotlight on Ability Unified Theater presents its production of One World, One Heart Wednesday through Friday evening this week at the Keigwin Middle School. The Shoreline Arts Alliance’s Annual Mardi Gras Gala and fundraiser takes place this Saturday at the Saybrook Point Inn and Spa. And don’t forget that the Skating Rink in Harbor Park is open on weekends. Infinity Hall in Hartford brings you Arrival from Sweden, the Music of Abba, on Thursday. Enjoy funk and soul on Friday with Zach Deputy and the Yankees. On Saturday, it’s Big Eyed Phish – a Dave Matthews Band Tribute. Infinity Norfolk has got classic pop on Thursday with Dana Fuchs, and it’s also Open Mic Night at The Bistro. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Shoplifters,” a Golden Globe-nominated Japanese film about a family of thieves and an abandoned child, and “Genesis 2.0,” a film about efforts to bring the long-extinct woolly mammoth back to life. They also continue “The World Before Your Feet,” on man’s documentary about walking the five boroughs of New York City, and “Free Solo,” a documentary about climbing El Capitan without a rope. On Friday they open “The Invisibles,” a German docudrama about four real-life Jews hiding in plain sight in WWII Berlin. Check the website for details and screening times. www.realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues “Maria By Callas,” a biopic of the iconic opera singer’s life story, through Wednesday. On Thursday they open “Mary Queen of Scots,” a film about the 16th century rivalry between Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth. from 1:30-2:30am (1, 3, 5) Windy City Sounds with MC Carthy and DJ Moore Life offers an episodic look at different eras and genres of the Chicago music scene.

from 2:30-3:30am Roots World Roots World Radio takes you on a tour across borders and genres, introducing you to music from far flung places and sometimes from right in your own backyard.

3:30-4am Nutmeg Junction a CT created originally scripted audio theater program that celebrates every genre of the golden age of radio.
