Good evening, it's friday, August 10th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.


at the Russell Library in Middletown, Next Monday at noon, they discuss “The Soloist” in their Book Talk with a Walk series, and their nutrition seminar, Eat Right When Money is Tight, continues at 1 pm with this week’s topics, Unit Pricing and Buying Seasonally. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. The library sponsors the Summer Meal Service for kids Mon through Fri at 1 pm. www.russelllibrary.org

at The Buttonwood Tree, The Aligned with Source Workshop happens Saturday morning, and Saturday evening the acoustic duo Kuf Knotz and Christine Elise bring their Higher Grounds tour to the Buttonwood. The NEAR and Far Storytellers offer a workshop with Liz Gruber Sunday at 3 pm. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven at café nine, Friday’s 5pm Happy Hour set features Frank Critelli. Friday night’s evening show features a triple bill with Craig Bell and Band, Jacques Le Coque, and The Furors.  Saturday’s weekly afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Gary Grippo & Friends. Later, Saturday night, The Very Reverend, Ports of Spain, Tier, and Pleasure Beach share a Café Nine Bill. Cherry Street Station In Wallingford hosts psychedelic rock on Friday with Crasis, When I Wake, Imbröglio, and more. The Sounds of Summer event happens Saturday at Cherry Street, starting at 3 pm with a big lineup including Unlucky Me, ThunderPhunk, Pinto Graham, and more. At Infinity Hall in Hartford it’s classic rock on Friday with Orleans. On Saturday they’ve got Justin Hayward, guitarist and composer of the Moody Blues. Thursday night at Infinity Hall Norfolk, Scott Sharrad makes for a night of blues rock.  Entrain takes the Infinity Norfolk stage on Friday and Jeff Daniels with the Ben Daniels Band play Saturday. www.infinityhall.com

The Greater Hartford West Indian Independence Celebration happens Saturday at 11 am at Bushnell Park. Right after The jive at Five stick around for Grand Central Station with DJ Jenny Doll, who will take us on back to the 30’s and forty’s with a mix of big band, jumping jazz,  rockabilly and more!

At 6:30 its time for the Universal Soundwave with Sistah Tee, offering 2 hrs of Reggae, RnB, and old school soul with a touch of Latin and African music, plus health and wellness tips!

at 8:30 Rockadee will take you to The Other Side for some sweet lovers rock and dance hall reggae and R&B spotlighting local artists mixed in with the hit makers.

From 10-11:30 Its time for Strictly off the Head with DJ Cocomotion the music mixologist presenting a live mix show done on the fly with no prepared mixes or blends. Featuring classic hip hop and house and R&B.

then at 11:30 its Yow-za with Connor Clockwize for an hour of Punk rock and fun

At 3am stay tuned for Louisiana Barn Dance from Pacifica.

At 5am you can catch the BBC world Report before we kick off our Saturday morning program with The Celtic Café at 6am followed by Café Italia from 7-8.
