Good evening, it's Wednesday, April 18th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's a look at what's going on in our area this week:

At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, it’s Shaking the Tree, a Gong and Sound Meditation, on Thursday. On Friday there’s a special Benefit Event at Oak & Velvet on Johnson St. Enjoy Celtic rock with TEMPEST!, food, games and more. Proceeds benefit the Amazing Grace Food Pantry and St. Vincent de Paul. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned with Source workshop, and there’s a Teen Open Mic at 3 pm. The evening show features The Painters with guest artists Warren Byrd & Saskia Laroo.  In New Haven, at Café Nine Tonight (Wednesday) the Quest take the stage, and it’s the Elm City Folk Festival on Thursday. Friday’s Happy Hour features Off The Trax, and it’s Folk Festival Day 2 for Friday evening. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and the event show brings you M.A.K.U. Soundsystem and Phat A$tronaut. Café Nine’s Sunday Buzz Matinee features Dave Hogan & Friends, and they round out the weekend with Bush Tetras, La Tunda, and Gold Dime on Sunday night.  http://www.cafenine.com/



Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it's the Wednesday Community Blues Jam. It’s Liviu’s Invitational on Thursday, and on Friday the Grammy-nominated John Primer Blues Band from Chicago takes the stage. Saturday’s headliner is the Alexis P Suter Band.. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Tonight/(Weds) at Cherry St. Station in Wallingford, it’s the Houston & The Dirty Rat US Tour Kick Off show. On Friday they’ve got the Fox Nüz “Rocket to Korea” record release with a variety of performers. On Saturday, enjoy The Krays, The Abductors, Barfight Champs, and more.  The Wesleyan Center for the Arts hosts Eiljah Huge on this evening/Wednesday at the Davison Art Center and Senior Thesis Exhibitions continue this week with a Reception at the Zilkha Gallery on Wednesday. Senior Recitals are happening as well at various venues. There’s a Thesis Theater Production on Sunday at CFA Courtyard with a performance of “(at)tend.” On Sunday they host a performance of Songs by Schubert, Ives, and Bruce at Crowell Concert Hall with Neely Bruce and baritone Christopher Grundy. The Russell Library in Middletown offers Origami this evening and you can learn about Hygge (hoo-gah) for Springtime this evening/Wednesday at 6 pm. Enjoy Songs of Nat King Cole on Thursday at 7 pm with John Brighenti and Orice Jenkins. There’s a LinkedIn Workshop Friday morning, and at 4 pm they sponsor Poet’s Corner. This week at the Space Ballroom in Hamden, you can catch The Messthetics, SAVAK, and Sunwatchers Thursday night. They’ve got Acid Mothers Temple, Yoo Doo Right, and Pangalactic on Friday. Enjoy Lydia, Kalimur, and Wayward City on Saturday, and on Sunday it’s Cults and QTY. The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford presents the Tremaine Lecture in Contemporary Art this evening/Wednesday at 5 pm. Admission is free, and they feature performance artist Mierle Laderman Ulekes who will discuss her site-specific work and MATRIX exhibition. On Thursday they sponsor Ulysses Grant Dietz of the Newark Museum, speaking on Beauty, Money, and Power: The Transformation of Taste in America’s Gilded Age. On Saturday at 10 am, they continue their Encounters series with a conversation on Interfaith Conflict. By popular demand, the Irish group We Banjo 3 performs Saturday at 7:30 pm. The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford hosts Poetry as Activism: “Citizen” by Claudia Rankine, a conversation about poetry and more as part of Hartford’s Big Read event, Thursday at 5 pm. At Infinity Hall in Hartford it’s disco and funk on Thursday with Turkuaz. On Friday they bring you Carl Palmer’s: Emerson, Lake & Palmer Legacy. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Ismael’s Ghosts,” a multilayered narrative about personal relationships, and “The Party,” a British comedy with verbal fireworks. Also continuing is “Foxtrot,” an Israeli film about the losses of war. All run through Thursday. Their Science on Screen offering on Tuesday is “Fast, Cheap and Out of Control,” with a post-film discussion by Trinity College Biology Professor Kent Dunlap. On Friday they open “Back to Burgundy,” a French film about three siblings uniting to save a family vineyard, and “Ramen Heads,” a Japanese film about the rise of the ramen empire. Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues the Academy Award nominee “In the Fade,” a German terrorist thriller, through tonight/

From 6:30-8pm Fusion Radio with James Fusion presents a 90 minute techno mix.



At 8pm The Warehouse with Mike Nyce features underground house music, mixed live for your listening pleasure.



From 9:30-11pm  The Vault with DJ Anton Banks wraps up our electronic dance music block.



From 11-midnight dumpster dive with smelly and yourstruly presents punk, art pop and diy coming from a garbage compactor near you.



At midnight THE TONIGHT SHOW with Balsamic and Shlomo is a Late-Night talk show style show concerning pop culture, politics and new music



From 1-2am Kellex and Kleenog’s Radio Hour keeps the fun going with experimental music and talk.



From 2-4am DJ Coroner’s Last Will and Testimony Haunts the Midnight airwaves with an eclectic mix of oneiric, experimental sounds. Ambient, noise, drone, poetry readings and more--sonic flotsam from the abandoned station.
And at 4am, the BBC World News comes on board and we begin our broadcast day with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
