Thursday's Jive

Good evening, it's Thursday, April 19th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's a look at what's going on in our area this week:


At the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, it’s Shaking the Tree, a Gong and Sound Meditation, on Thursday. On Friday there’s a special Benefit Event at Oak & Velvet on Johnson St. Enjoy Celtic rock with TEMPEST!, food, games and more. Proceeds benefit the Amazing Grace Food Pantry and St. Vincent de Paul. On Saturday morning it’s the Aligned with Source workshop, and there’s a Teen Open Mic at 3 pm. The evening show features The Painters with guest artists Warren Byrd & Saskia Laroo. The Russell Library in Middletown tonight at 7 pm with John Brighenti and Orice Jenkins. There’s a LinkedIn Workshop Friday morning, and at 4 pm they sponsor Poet’s Corner. Check the website for more activities and offerings for patrons of all ages. www.russelllibrary.org

 In New Haven, at Café Nine Tonight it’s the Elm City Folk Festival on Thursday. Friday’s Happy Hour features Off The Trax, and it’s Folk Festival Day 2 for Friday evening. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friends, and the event show brings you M.A.K.U. Soundsystem and Phat A$tronaut. Café Nine’s Sunday Buzz Matinee features Dave Hogan & Friends, and they round out the weekend with Bush Tetras, La Tunda, and Gold Dime on Sunday night.  http://www.cafenine.com/


Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, it's tonight It’s Liviu’s Invitational on Thursday, and on Friday the Grammy-nominated John Primer Blues Band from Chicago takes the stage. Saturday’s headliner is the Alexis P Suter Band.. http://www.blackeyedsallys.com/

Cherry St. Station in Wallingford,on Friday they’ve got the Fox Nüz “Rocket to Korea” record release with a variety of performers.  The Wesleyan Center for the Arts Senior Recitals are happening as well at various venues. There’s a Thesis Theater Production on Sunday at CFA Courtyard with a performance of “(at)tend.” On Sunday they host a performance of Songs by Schubert, Ives, and Bruce at Crowell Concert Hall with Neely Bruce and baritone Christopher Grundy. This week at the Space Ballroom in Hamden, you can catch The Messthetics, SAVAK, and Sunwatchers Thursday night. They’ve got Acid Mothers Temple, Yoo Doo Right, and Pangalactic on Friday. Enjoy Lydia, Kalimur, and Wayward City on Saturday, and on Sunday it’s Cults and QTY. The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford On Thursday they sponsor Ulysses Grant Dietz of the Newark Museum, speaking on Beauty, Money, and Power: The Transformation of Taste in America’s Gilded Age. On Saturday at 10 am, they continue their Encounters series with a conversation on Interfaith Conflict. By popular demand, the Irish group We Banjo 3 performs Saturday at 7:30 pm. The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center in Hartford hosts Poetry as Activism: “Citizen” by Claudia Rankine, a conversation about poetry and more as part of Hartford’s Big Read event, Thursday at 5 pm. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues “Ismael’s Ghosts,” a multilayered narrative about personal relationships, and “The Party,” a British comedy with verbal fireworks. Also continuing is “Foxtrot,” an Israeli film about the losses of war. All run through Thursday. Their Science on Screen offering on Tuesday is “Fast, Cheap and Out of Control,” with a post-film discussion by Trinity College Biology Professor Kent Dunlap. On Friday they open “Back to Burgundy,” a French film about three siblings uniting to save a family vineyard, and “Ramen Heads,” a Japanese film about the rise of the ramen empire. at 10:30 Spicy! Spicy! Hot! Hot! with Beizo Bish and Jew Chainzs present Scalding hot takes on a new area of pop culture each week, featuring topical tracks and a variety of dynamic guests.

from 11pm-midnight The American Empire with, Tootse Mutants An exploration of the influence of American cultural imperialism on foreign music, such as Korean Hip-Hop, Japanese Jazz, and Peruvian Punk and so much more.

At midnight Jazzalicious Definition with DJ Stocks’n’Socks and MC McGee takes you on a travel through the history of jazz, spotlighting a different artist, sub-genre, or time period each week.

1-2am (1,3,5) Road Trip with DJ G and Victoria Our show will feature local artists from different cities across the county. Each show will focus on one city and feature mostly alternative rock artists. 

2-3am (1,3,5) Modern French Touch with Sam A look at France’s modern electro house scene, through the emergence of newly influential French touch labels. 

3-4am The Hour of Slack from the Church of The Subgenius.

At 4am We bring you the BBC World Report and we kick of weekdays with Morning Edition from NPR From 59am.
