Good evening, it's Monday, March 2^nd. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers talk radio from NPR and Pacifica, as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends our student and community volunteers bring you the best in free-form programming.

Now here's some of what's happening in our area this week:

The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown holds an Anything Goes Open Mic tonight, hosted by the Terri and Rob Duo. They’ve got Laughter Yoga with Mylène on Tuesday, and on Thursday there’s an Acoustic Open Mic with Bob Gotta. The Story City Group takes the stage on Friday night, and the Aligned With Source workshop happens Saturday morning.  All the Write Ways: A Workshop for Self-Expression continues Saturday afternoon, and in the evening you can enjoy acoustic originals and more with Luke Hendon and The Django Music Collective. They sponsor a reception on Sunday afternoon for the March art exhibit, #EachforEqual, a collection honoring International Women’s Day. www.buttonwood.org

In New Haven, at Café Nine, Blue Note Mondays features the Dan Liparini Trio, and Luke Hendon’t Acoustic Project happens on Tuesday with Django’s Reserve. There’s another Comedy Open Mic on Wednesday hosted by Dan Rice, and on Thursday they headline Sinecera. Friday’s Happy Hour features DW Ditty, followed by the late show with The Yawpers and Elison Jackson. The Saturday Jazz Jam Session is led by Michael Coppola & Friends, and the evening show brings you the Freddy Deboe Band and DJB the T Jr. The Sunday Buzz matinée features Daphne Lee Martin and Shandy Lawson, and they round out the weekend later with The Western Den and Olivia Barton. www.cafenine.com

At Black-Eyed Sally’s in Hartford, they bring you Kim Wilson’s Blues Allstars tomorrow, and on Wednesday The Community Blues Jam is with Tommy Whalen. Liviu’s Invitational comes your way on Thursday, and on Friday they headline the Chris Beard Blues Band. Manic Presents brings Circles Around the Sun to the Space Ballroom on Tuesday, appearing with Frank LoCrasto. On Friday you can catch The Way I Am, Project Kate, and Chris Grosso. On Saturday, they bring you OM, and Wovenhand. At the College Street Music Hall in New Haven, it’s Silversun Pickups and The New Regime on Tuesday. The State House Cabaret in New Haven holds their usual Open Mic Night on Tuesday hosted by Steve Rodgers, and featuring Glambat. Enjoy world beat and more on Wednesday with Headroom and 75 Dollar Bill. It’s indie rock night on Thursday with Big Fang, Ditch Boys, The Fiction Kids, and Addy Edward. Celebrate Women’s History Month n Friday with #BackWomenInFuturity. There’s a special Record Release show on Saturday with Space Camp, appearing with Crag ask, Salt People, and more. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts Martha Hall Kelly tomorrow with her new novel, “Lost Roses.” Jennifer Rosner presents her debut novel, “The Yellow Bird Sings,” on Thursday. Up in Hartford, Soul Warriors offers a weekly Soul Grit session Tuesday evening at their Arbor Street Headquarters, and Center Church continues their Lunchtime Meditation on Wednesday at noon. It’s Karaoke Night at The Russell Wednesday evening, and The Bruce Gregori Quartet performs at The Half Door. The Elizabeth Park Conservancy opens its Spring Greenhouse Show on Friday morning. The show is free, and continues through March 13^th.  The indoor music series at City Place continues Friday at noon with The Skipping Stones, and in the evening Cam’ron brings their Purple Haze 2 Tour to The Webster. Enjoy Pierogies and Punchlines at the Polish National Home of Hartford Friday night with the comedy of Marty Caproni. The Arch Street Tavern hosts The New Mosaic and Chad B. Springer on Friday evening. The Connecticut Historical Society presents Silly Saturday with Dr. Seuss on Saturday morning, and there’s another session of Goat Yoga at Dunkin’ Donuts Park. Bad Omens, Oh, Sleeper, and more are at the Webster Underground on Saturday night, and there’s a Community Breathwork and Sound Healing at Tainted, Inc. Runaway Gin presents a Tribute to Phish Saturday at the Arch Street Tavern. Christ Church Cathedral brings you Klezmer Dreams on Sunday afternoon with music for string quartet and clarinet, and in the evening you can hear Spite, Varials, and more at the Webster Underground. The Middletown Arts & Culture Office wants you to know that the Connecticut Poetry Society is sponsoring a Poets on Poetry event at the Southington Public Library tonight at 6:30. Poet Maria Sassi will present on Galway Kinnell. The Oddfellows Playhouse Teen Repertory Company is holding auditions for their production of “Romeo and Juliet” tomorrow and Thursday at 6:30 pm. The Mac650 Gallery and Artist Co-Op is hosting Your Diary, Snowpiler, Gullet and more on Tuesday and Wednesday, and you can catch Squirrel Flower, Cedric Noel, and Shy on Friday. They’ve got Queen Moo, Bravely, and more on Saturday evening. Actors from MARC will present “The Wizard of Oz” on Friday morning at Oddfellows Playhouse. Wesleyan University’s Center for the Arts sponsors free events this week, and tonight you can hear their Toneburst Laptop and Electronic Arts Ensemble perform new works at the Ring Arts Hall at 8 pm. The 39^th annual Middletown Public Schools Art Exhibition holds its Opening Reception on Saturday at the Zilkha Gallery. The works will be on view until March 15^th.  You can also purchase tickets for the Thesis Theater Production of “Phoebe in Winter,” by Jen Silverman, with performances Wednesday through Friday at the Patricelli Theater. The Russell Library in Middletown hosts the Racial Justice Book Group tomorrow night to discuss “Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls” by Anissa Gray. The Teen Book Discussion Group meets Wednesday at 4 pm, followed by Scrabble Wednesday at 5 pm. Their First Fridays Book Discussion takes place offsite on Friday  evening at theRaMa LuNa Center for Yoga, with this month’s selection being “Finding Dorothy” by Elizabeth Letts. Enjoy the reunion performance by The Hot Flashes, a trio of female vocalists, on Sunday afternoon, where you can hear bluegrass, folk, and more backed by members of the Stillwaters band. Infinity Hall Hartford brings you rock by the Moody Blues’ John Lodge on Wednesday. On Thursday, they’ve got blues and jam with Melvin Seals & JGB. The Dublin City Ramblers bring you Celtic favorites on Friday, and on Saturday Ronnie Earl & The Broadcasters offer blues and blues rock. Jim Messina takes the stage on Sunday with rock and folk. At Infinity Norfolk, Waylone Payne brings you country and rock on Wednesday, and on Friday Christone “Kingfish” Ingram plays blues rock. Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues screenings of the Oscar-winning film, “Parasite,” and “The “The Cordillera of Dreams,” a Chilean documentary that blends historical memory, political trauma, and geography. Also continuing is “Cat Video Fest 2020,” All run through Thursday. Friday’s opening is “Portrait of A Lady on Fire,” a story of forbidden love in 18^th Century France. Trinity College’s Cinestudio continues the run of “Beanpole,” a Russian film about post-WWII Leningrad, through Wednesday. On Thursday they open “Little Women,” directed by Greta Gerwig. Their Exhibition on Screen series continues on Sunday with two matinée screenings of “Lucian Freud- A Self-Portrait,” and in the evening they open a run of “Mephisto,” a restoration of this 1981 classic set in the Berlin of the Third Reich. Right after the jive, it’s Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry. From classic bop to relevant new releases.

From 6-6:30pm Radical Radiowaves with DJ Oracle chronicles the actions of the left locally and across the country.

From 6:30-8 pm, 75% Folk with Michael Benson offers a mix of contemporary folk, blues, jazz and acoustic music, along with occasional live interviews.

At 8 until 9:30 pm, it’s the Rumpus Room with Lord Lewis. The best in vintage and contemporary funk, soul, jazz, reggae, dub, afro and Latin dance floor grooves.

From 9:30 to 11 pm, The Jack Sullivan Show brings you music from the 1950s & 1960's as well as live requests, TV trivia, and lot of fun.

The oldies continue from 11-12:30 am, with Hits of the 60s and 70s with Jimmy Z playing Billboard Hot 100 hits. Enjoy special features and little known facts about the music and artists.

At 12:30 until 1:30am it’s Cloggin the Noggin with DJ Oatneel. Every day is national something day. We clog your nog with facts and know-how about the thing of the day.

From 1:30-2:30 am Breakfast of Champions with The Gonch asks, what would an album eat for breakfast? Music artists consume in the making of new albums.

From 2:30-3:00am, Spoiler Alert Radio provides a retrospective look at independent artists in filmmaking from across the globe.

From 3-4 am, stay tuned for a rebroadcast of the day’s noontime episode of Democracy Now! from Pacifica.

Finally, rounding out the night from 4-5 am is the BBC World Report with international news coverage and then we kick off each weekday at 5am with Morning Edition from NPR.
