Friday's Jive 01-26-18

Good evening, it's Friday, January 26th, and this is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and run down of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends. I'm Stephan Allison, host of River Valley Rhythms heard Thursdays at 4 pm here at WESU. Now, here’s a rundown of some of what’s going on in the community this weekend.
Tonight at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, it’s jazz and blues with Bop Tweed. The Aligned with Source Workshop and Meditation is Saturday morning, and the evening brings the Everything Turned To Color trio. The Hearing Voices Network meets Monday mornings and Mystic Collages, featuring works by artist Flo Bartosiak, is displayed throughout the month. Details @ buttonwood.org

At the Russell Library in Middletown, Yoga in The Hubbard Room is Saturday morning.  The Vintage Players presents Carolyn Kirsch’s new play, “So Bea It,” on Sunday at 2 pm. Details @ russelllibrary.org

New Haven’s Café Nine Friday 5pm Happy Hour performance features Frank Critelli and the late show features The Suitcase Junket, Kate Lorenz, and An Historic. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, and the late show features Girls, Guns and Glory, along with Jeremy & The Harlequins. The Sunday Buzz Matinee features Ian Moore, and they close out Sunday with a Blues Jam Session with the George Lesiw Band. Details @ cafenine.com

In Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight the George T Gregory Band takes the stage. Australian singer/songwriter Harper & The Midwest Kind takes the stage on Saturday. Details @ blackeyedsallys.com

At Toad’s Place in New Haven tonight, it’s Shakedown playing the Music of The Dead and Beyond, along with the Kazoo Crew Family Band while The Blameless Project takes the stage in Lilly’s Pad. Tonight at Infinity Hall Norfolk, it’s Vance Gilbert with Kerri Powers, and Saturday night  catch Broken Arrow - A Tribute to Neil Young. Infinity Hall Hartford has singer/songwriter Howie Day tonight. Speak Up Storytelling presents “Unfinished Business” on Saturday. On Sunday, you can catch alternative rock, hip-hop, and more with G. Love and Special Sauce. Details @ infinityhall.com

Manic Presents brings Umphrey’s McGee and Nicole Atkins to The College Street Music Hall in New Haven tonight. On Saturday, at College Street they headlining Maria Bamford, appearing with Jackie Kashian. On Saturday, they bring Bad, Bad Hats, Photocomfort, and Glambat to the Space Ballroom in Hamden. The Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore in Middletown hosts an event for kids on Saturday at 2 pm, featuring MarcyKate Connolly presenting her new middle-grade fantasy, “Shadow Weaver.” Details @ wesleyanrjjulia.com

The Connecticut Historical Society invites you to their ongoing exhibit of strange objects connected to our state’s material culture, That’s Weird, happening every Saturday. Details @ chs.org

The Connecticut Science Center in Hartford hosts a Women in Science Day Saturday at 11 am featuring a Q & A with members of the Society of Women Engineers. Details @ ctsciencecenter.org

And, here's our rundown of cinema, off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues Loving Vincent, an animated film about the iconic artist, through Wednesday. Today’s openings include The Final Year, a documentary about the last year of Obama’s foreign policy team, and Django, a French film about the jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt in Nazi-occupied Paris. The afternoon movie is Molly’s Game about Molly Bloom, the skier turned high-stakes poker queen. Details & screening times @ realartways.org

Trinity College’s Cinestudio in Hartford continues through Saturday, Woody Allen’s Wonder Wheel, about an unmarried mother raising a son in the Coney Island of the 1950’s. Sunday’s Exhibition on Screen series continues with the work of David Hockney at The Royal Academy of Arts, and The Square, a Swedish film about conflict between the classes begins a run Sunday. The Connecticut Science Center is screening two films in 3D at the Hoffman Foundation Science Theater in Hartford. You can enjoy Dream Big: Engineering Our World, about inventions and structures from across the globe, or National Geographic’s Extreme Weather: Powerful Forces Are Colliding. The Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford is screening The Divine Order, a dramatic comedy about the suffragette movement in Switzerland, Saturday & Sunday at 2pm. Details @ thewadsworth.org

And now let’s take a look at tonight’s programming on WESU and to be safe, it's best to check the WESU website for the up-to-date schedule.

Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 6:30pm, it'll be Wild Wild Live! with Babe and Beth expounding on that Wesleyan music scene.

And from 6:30-7pm catch the Middletown Youth Radio Project, a weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood. 

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sista Queen T - offering a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues. Plus health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips.

Next up until 10pm, we take it From the Otherside with Rok-A-Dee where 60% of the show is love songs of different genre and the others Reggae Dancehall, R&B, and new artiste.    
                                                        
Then from 10 to 11:30pm it's Strickly Off the Head where DJ Cocomotion the Music Mixologist provides a live mixshow done on the fly or freestyle, with no pre-planned mixes or blends - R&B, old school, hip hop, rap and house.

Bridging the night to the morning hours, from 11:30pm to 12:30am you’ll have An A and a B with DJ N following the premise that every band has its hits - and a multitude of unknown, hidden gems. Songs played per band (70s-2000s rock) seek to highlight this dichotomy.

From 12:30pm until 3am Saturday we go into serious OVERDRIVE w/Clarence & Shantay Scott - offering the best urban contemporary, hip hop, and traditional gospel music on the planet!

From 3 until 5am you are taken to Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat, who has
a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with theBBC World News - a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation, and Pacifica.

Staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6 to 7am it’sthe Celtic Café with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.

And now that the coffee’s hot enjoy Caffé Italia from 7:00 to 8:00am, serving up a slice of Italy every Saturday morning. You don't have to speak Italian to taste it: just relax, listen, and enjoy!
