Good evening, it's Monday, August 22nd, and this is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. By day, WESU offers a diverse lineup of talk radio featuring NPR and Pacifica as well as independent and local public affairs sources. Weeknights and weekends we bring you the best in free-form community programming.

Now, here's a rundown of what's happening in our area this week: 


Tonight, at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, it’s the usual Anything Goes Open Mic and Moments of Gratitude. On Thursday, the Middlesex Drum Circle comes your way.  On Friday, it’s Zydelicious, with high energy Zydeco offerings. On Saturday morning Annaita Ghandy’s Aligned with Source workshop happens at Harborpark this Saturday at 10:30 am. On Saturday night, they bring you The Painters, with jazz, rock, classical, funk, and more. Tonight, down in New Haven at Café Nine, they celebrate the two-year anniversary of the Monthly poetry, spoken word open mic event, ”Words & Music”. On Tuesday they’ve got royGbiv, Do It For Your Heroes, Grawlix, and August On Sunday. On Wednesday, Manic Productions brings Bob Log III, The Kevin Dowling Fitness Hour, and Dr. Martino to the Café stage. On Thursday the headliner is The Cobalt Rhythm Kings, appearing with Mark Zaretsky & “Magic Mike” Bloomer. Friday’s Happy Hour artist is DW Ditty, with Yarn and Wise Old Moon on stage for the late show. Saturday’s Jazz Jam Session is with the George Baker Band, followed by The Lost Riots, Two-Fisted Law, Pus, and The Cuts. On Sunday, Cygnus Radio & Cafe 9 present "The Sunday Buzz" Matinee with Johnny Nicholas & Hell Bent. Group Chat and Underwear come along later Sunday night to round out your weekend. www.cafenine.com


Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight’s Jazz Monday featured artist is Medusa. Michael Palin’s Other Orchestra works out new material on Tuesday nightat at Sally’s. On Wednesday it’s the Community Blues Jam, hosted by Tommy Whalen, this week. Friday, you can hear all your favorite rock and roll at The 60’s Explosion Show. On Saturday Blue Devil Bluez takes the stage to bring you dance blues, Motown, funk and more.  www.blackeyedsallys.com 

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, it’s the usual Night of Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence & Friends, tonight. Tomorrow, Tuesday, Yellowman and Lucid Empire take the stage. On Thursday, Paper Route Empire presents the Young Dolph Royalty Tour. On Friday, they bring you Reggae Riddims Live featuring Mr. Vegas, Khato, and Ayo Jay. On Saturday, it’s another Original Saturday Night College Dance Party.   www.toadsplace.com

On Tuesday nights, at Middletown’s Harbor Park, the Summer Sounds Weekly Concert Series overlooking the CT River features Elite Syncopation, playing ragtime and early jazz. The Summer Sounds concerts are free and open to the public and begin at 7pm. Details at www.arts2go.org

On Wednesday and Thursday, at the Russell Library in Middletown, teens can drop in for a DIY school supply workshop at 2. Teen Art Boot Camp happens Wednesday night, registration is required. The Veterans Writing Group meets every Thursday at 7. There’s an End of Summer Scavenger Hunt and party on Friday for teens at 3. There’s free music at noon Wednesday at Constitution Plaza in Hartford presented by their Lunchtime Music Series, “Audio Feed.” This week’s featured performer is Heather Fay.  Full info at www.hartford.com

On Wednesday there’s a free lecture and discussion on Caribbean Carnival traditions at the Connecticut Old State House in Hartford, presented by Dr. Milla Riggio of Trininty College.  Details at www.chs.org  

Manic Productions brings you UB40 (with original members Astro & Mickey) and The Wailers to The College Street Music Hall in New Haven on Wednesday. At Bar in New Haven on Wednesday night Manic presents The PigPen Theatre Co., Morningsiders, and Kindred Queer. On Saturday, they’ve got The Claypool Lennon Delirium, and Jjuujjuu at the College Street Music Hall.  On Sunday, Manic productions presents legendary stoner rockers, The Melvins, appearing with Helms Alee, at The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden.  http://www.manicproductions.org/

Cherry Street Station in Wallingford brings you Wess Meets West, Mars Red Sky, and Warm this Wednesday.  On Friday, they feature Thirty Silver, Goat Herder, Reptilian Race, and Sperm Donor. On Saturday, it’s the Falling Further Fest 2016, hosted by Mike DeLucia. Saturday’s lineup includes Casting Shadows, Absence of Despair, and Whiskey and the Martyr. The Hartt School Community Division is hosting a Dance Open House this Saturday from 10 am – noon with free sample classes for kids 3 to 14 years of age.  Details at www.harttweb.hartford.edu

The annual Wadsworth Mansion Open Air Market and Festival happens this Sunday starting at 10 am at the Mansion in Middletown.  Enjoy local vendors, food, music and more.  Historical tours will be given throughout the day.  The Middletown Symphonic Band performs at 10, followed by Jazz Affair at noon, with Legacy Coverage closing out in the afternoon. Firehouse 12 in New Haven presents their monthly DJ-curated event, WAX, this Sunday at 9 pm.  It’s an all-45 record party featuring Middletown’s own “DJ NEB” alongside Dooley-O on the turntables.  Details at www.firehouse12.com

Connecticut’s Farmers' Markets are in full gear now. Here in Middletown you can you can support local farmers and get nutritious home-grown goods on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the long running market at the South Green on Old Church Street from 8am-1pm.  On Fridays, The Middletown North End farmers market happens on Main  Street outside Its Only Natural Market. Now, here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut: 

Through Thursday, Hartford’s Real Art Ways continues their run of “The Kind Words,” an Israeli comedy following Jewish siblings on a road trip to learn about their real father. Also continuing is “Little Men,” a contemporary story of life-defining friendships that develop in the midst of familial turmoil.  Both run through Thursday.  On Friday they open “Nuts!,” a Sundance Award-winning documentary about an eccentric genius who build an empire during Depression-era America.  It runs through the weekend.  www.realartways.org 

Trinity College’s Cinestudio ends its Wim Wenders film series this week, screening “The American Friend” tonight, “Paris Texas” on Tuesday, “The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick” on Wednesday, and “Wrong Movie” on Thursday. On Friday they open a new 4K restoration of “Howards End,” a saga of class relations in Edwardian England. There’s a matinee screening Sunday in their Globe On Screen series of Shakespeare’s “Merchant of Venice.” Details and screening times at www.cinestudio.org

Now here's what's on the air tonight on WESU:

Right after the Jive at Five, stay tuned for an hour of Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry.

From 6-8:00 pm, Sir Bruce is in the air chair with 2 hours of old school RnB.

At 8 pm, stay tuned for Unfocused Folk with Chip Austin, for American music from Nashville and round the world, including folk, acoustic country, and roots rock from emerging and veteran artists. 

From 9:30-10:30 pm, Cruiser’s Radio with Jack Sullivan offers a blend of Rock & Roll from the 1950 – 1960’s that provides the news of that era along with the music.

At 10:30 it’s “Free Talk” with Al Robinson & Deni Young, a commentary talk show addressing news, politics, entertainment and weather.

From midnight to 3 am Franco’s Studio 54 with Francaccio di Roma provides three hours of Disco and dance music of the 70’s and 80’s.

We switch it up big time at 3 am when Maximum Rock & Roll Radio comes alive to offer the best DIY punk, garage, and hardcore Rock and Roll.

BBC World news comes your way at 4, with tomorrow’s broadcast day starting with Morning Edition from NPR at 5 am.
