Good evening, it's Wednesday, February 17th. This is the Jive at Five, our daily community calendar and rundown of nighttime programming, here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown. Now here's a rundown of what's happening in our area this week:

Here in Middletown, at the Buttonwood Tree, tomorrow(Thursday), Cintamani and KaleYums play a Groove Jam session of world music. On Friday it’s An Evening of Music with Ashley Hamel and Orice Jenkins. Transitional Tai Chi and the weekly Aligned with Source guided meditation workshop happen this Saturday at the Buttonwood. Saturday evening, Don White brings a blended storytelling-comedy-author-troubadour-singer-songwriter performance. www.buttonwood.org

Down in New Haven, at Café Nine, tonight it’s Words & Music, a monthly event full of local & touring musicians, writers, poets and comedians. Tomorrow (Thursday) you can see Henry Flower, Phemale and Verdigrls. This Friday's Weekly Wind Down Happy Hour features Travis Moody for a solo performance. Friday evening Mission Zero, Bearstronaut and Superhuman Happiness rock the house. Café Nine’s weekly Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam Session is with Tony Dioguardi & Friend and later Saturday night you can catch Bent Knee, Ports of Spain, Kindred Queer and Olive Tiger. Sunday matinee features artists Sam Perduta, Daniel Eugene and Xavier Serrano while Sunday evening showcases the bands Crunk Witch, If Jesus Had Machine Guns, The Forest Room and Sketch the Cataclysm. www.cafenine.com 

At Toad’s Place in New Haven, Friday evening in Lilly’s Pad…The Arc Agency Presents: Loner Chic for their Record Release Party. Pinegrove, Milkshakes and The Sleep Cozies also play. Rounding out the weekend, The Helium Brothers play hot bluegrass jams and cool country rock. www.toadsplace.com

Tonight Pacific Standard Tavern in New Haven, Greener Grounds with Tweed take the stage and on Friday evening, Beau Sasser’s Escape Plan performs. On Saturday you can catch music from Black Rock Social. www.pacificstandardtavern.com

This evening, Manic Productions in New Haven presents Kurt Vile and the Violators with Xylouris White at the College Street Music Hall. Also this evening The Soft Moon and Landing take the stage at Bar. Josh Ritter & The Royal City Band with Elephant Revival play Thursday night at College Street Music Hall. Friday evening, you can catch The Slackers, The Hempsteadys and The Screw-Ups at The Ballroom at The Outer Space in Hamden. www.manicproductions.org

Up in Hartford at Black-Eyed Sally’s, tonight brings long running weekly Community Blues Jam with Tommy Whalen. Friday, Paul Gabriel Blues Band performs electric blues. Christine Ohlman & Rebel Montez will be at Black-Eyed Sally’s on Saturday.

This Thursday, it's the 5th Connecticut Printmakers Invitational exhibition, Multiple Impressions. The February Creative Cocktail Hour in Hartford will host an artist reception from 6-8 with music provided by artist Tang Sauce. The Hartt School and Real Art Ways co-present the Bang on a Can All-Stars for a Saturday Performance. At Russell Library here in Middletown, you can check out The Job Group, Thursday mornings for a chance to network with other job seekers and professionals. Veteran's Writing Group continues to meet every Thursday, 7pm. T’ai Chi lessons are held for the next two Saturday's. Also this Saturday, Russell Library presents the Steve Liskow Writing Workshop – Characters Create Story. www.russelllibrary.org

This evening Wesleyan University Center for the Arts hosts Richard S. Field in Cutting Remarks II, a talk on the intricacies and problems of cutting technique used in 15th and 16th century fine art. Thursday, Special Collections and Archives present Passion and Power, Prints and Text: German Books in the Age of Dürer. Sunday you can catch Stan Scott and Friends performing old and new songs of emigrants, soldiers, mystics and laborers. www.wesleyan.edu/cfa


The DeChamplains, bringing a mix of romantic jazz piano and vocals to the Northwest Park Nature Center in Windsor, on Saturday, February 20th, at 7:30 p.m. The DeChamplains will perform music from The American Songbook and Bebop classics as well as contemporary and original compositions. www.northwestpark.org  for information and reservations.  Proceeds benefit environmental studies at the Park.

Up in Hartford at Real Art Ways, tonight and tomorrow you can catch Oscar Nominated Live Action and Documentary Shorts 2016. Films Aferim! A and A War open Friday and run through the weekend. www.realartways.org 

Tonight Trinity College’s Cinestudio is showing the Oscar nominated film Brooklyn starring Oscar nominee Saorise Ronan about an Irish immigrant in the 1950’s, opens and with viewings through Saturday. On Sunday, it’s a showing of the recently restored Chimes at Midnight, a film from 1965 based on five of Shakespeare’s plays and Holinshed’s Chronicles by Raphael Holinshed

From 6-6:30pm stick around for Your Mind Matters with Helen Evrard MD, exploring the brain conditions known as mental illness from a holistic viewpoint with guests who study them, treat them, or are affected by them 

From 6:30-8, it’s Fusion Radio with James Fusion offering the original and best Techno mix on the radio.

At 8pm, Mike Nyce hosts The Warehouse, showcasing the best of underground house music mixed live for your listening pleasure.

From 9:30-11pm its The Vault with DJ Anton Banks presenting the latest in hard techno, minimal, tech-house and leftfield mixed live. Also featuring exclusive music from international artists.

#blackmusicmatters with DJ Frau Miau and DJ Xan is on at 11pm, a show dedicated to playing music for black people by black people. Ranging from slave songs to Kendrick Lamar, this show serves as a reminder why black lives matter.

From 12:00-1:00am, it's Metal on Metal!!! with The Metal Messenger, bringing you the best in death, thrash, black, progressive...as long as it has shredding solos, its on this show.

1:00-2:00am features Nocturnal Mom with DJava, playing stories and the songs we remember them by.

From 2:30-3:30am it's Scripted Sounds with DJ Crystal Beth and Gideon Babe Howard. From the classics to indie movies, Scripted Sounds plays a variation of movie soundtracks to show how music and moving image can work together harmoniously.

At 3:30 you can catch the Something Old, Something New with DJ Dazzle and DJ Aurora. In this show they explore the sounds old and new looking at musical evolution in genres and styles.

BBC World news comes your way from  at 4 and then we begin tomorrow’s broadcast day with Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.
