Good evening, it's Monday,  March 11 and this is the Jive at Five - WESU's Daily community calendar and rundown of night time programming here on 88.1 FM WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming week nights and weekends.   Here's a run down of some of what's happening in the community this week.

Over at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown tonight at 7:45, it’s  “Moments of Gratitude” sharing gratitude to build positive energy and encouragement.  Later tonight at 8:00, it's the "Anything Goes" open mic, hosted by WESU's own J-Cherry.  Sign up is at 7:30.   On Wednesday at 7:00, it’s  the "Evening Oasis",Belly Dancing Presentation.  With beautiful dancers, traditional dress and music. All are welcome for this entertaining and empowering evening.  On thursday at 7:00 is the "Writers Out Loud" open mic.  Talented prose writers of every ilk come to Writers Out Loud! to present up & coming works-in-progress, directly from their own pens.  Sign up is at 6:45.  Friday at The Buttonwood Tree  at 8:00pm Come listen to some real folk music created by real folks with Cece, Ruth, Kim & Kevin for A Night of Music & Song.  And Saturday at 7:30am come renew your natural energy with a gentle exercise of Qigong (Chi Kung) .And on Saturday, at 2:00pm theres Stop Smoking through Hypnosis!  Start the year off by improving your health! And on Sunday  "Food Not Bombs" shares food at about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood. All are welcome to enjoy a free vegetarian meal and to help prepare it beforehand at First Church at on Court Street at 11:30 am. Tomorrow at 8pm Over at Café Nine in New Haven , it’s Anna Rose; w/ Becky Kessler & Floyd Kellogg; Jason Jame, who together could best be described as a spitfire of rock and roll passion. Wednesday at 7pm at Café Nine, Keith Harkins takes the stage.  Keith was  Recently voted Derry's greatest Cultural Icon in a public competition, he is a gifted guitar-playing singer-songwriter.  And 7pm Thursday at Cafe Nine brings: ODDBALL ENTERTAINMENT Presenting: Mary Gauthier; w/ Scott and Joanna.  Mary is a Alt-country singer/songwriter who gains inspiration from her lifes many trials and tribulations.
Friday night at Cafe Nine it's JEFFREY THUNDER'S BIRTHDAY BASH featuring: The Vultures, Fatal Film, The Lost Riots and The Hempsteadys with DJ Live Mike spining between sets. Saturday, from 4:30 to 7:30 at Café nine, it’s the Saturday Afternoon Jazz Jam w/ host Tony Dioguardi and friends, followed at 9 by Steve Broderick who is best known for his signing with the Trans Siberian Orchestra for the past 10 years.  And then Sunday at Cafe Nine, starting at 2pm it's: RAY NEAL PRESENTS: A Celebration of the Life of Tim Murphy.  Later on Sunday at 8pm its the SUNDAY-AFTER-SUPPER JAM open mic with host The Cafe Nine all Stars.  Sign ups start at 7pm sharp!  Learn more at www.cafenine.com.

Also in New Haven, over at Toad’s Place, tonight starting at 9pm is A Night of Smooth Jazz with Rohn Lawrence & Friends. Tomorrow 7:30 is Adrenaline Mob with opening acts Nothing More, Vengeance, and Mile Marker Zero.  Wednesday  at 8pm is DJ BUCK’S REGGAE BIRTHDAY SESSION W/KONSHENS.  At 10 o clock on Wednseday its EDM Night ft Ft. DJ HighLife, DJ JiggaWompz & Joey Fedz spinning- ELECTRO / DUBSTEP / HOUSE / ETC.Friday at 7pm at Toads is the Cosmic Dust Bunnies with Viral, Brass Tax opening.  And food!  Saturday at 9:30 pm is THE ORIGINAL SATURDAY NIGHT DANCE PARTY- with a special student discount price!  Later Saturday night at Toads at 10pm the UPCROWN NEON & TRUE CREW PRESENT: DANK including Trap, Dubstep, Electro, House, and EDM.      For more information, go to www.toadsplace.com.

Up in Hartford at Blackeyed Sally’s, tonight is Jazz Monday, the best taste of live jazz in Hartford. Tomorrow brings Michael Palin's Other Orchestra, an 18-piece band, to Sally’s stage. And Wednesday it’s the Blues Jam, this week with Gene Donaldson. Thursday at Black Eyed Sallys, starting at 6:30pm is the Hole In the Wall Fundraiser w/ Sundance Kidz.  Then friday at 9pm its Lance Lopez Band w/Sal Iacobucci and Dreaming the Blues.  Saturday at 9pm its Jeff Pitchell & Texas Flood- top-notch musicians and singers who unite to bring a high energy mix of Rhythm and Blues, Rock, Soul and funky Texas Blues.   www.blackeyedsallys.com for more info.


Tomorrow at 7:00pm at The Russell Library in The Hubbard Room is "An Introduction to Kenpo Karate." Led by Debbie Shekosky, the Director of Cromwell Martial Arts, there will be both demonstration and instruction in Kenpo Karate. All ages are welcome.  Thursday at 6:30pm at The Russell Library in Meeting Room 2 is "We Were There" Veterans Writing Group.  This series invites veterans to share their stories in their own voices. All veterans, either active or retired, are encouraged to come and write their experiences for their own benefit or to share with family and friends. And Friday at 9:30am in the Hubbard Room is an Introduction to Image Editing with GIMP.  learn to crop, resize, color correct, add text and fix scratches and blemishes. And Saturday at 11am in Meeting Room 3 is a meeting of The Russel Knitters.  Bring your knitting projects and join an enthusiastic group of knitters who are willing to share ideas and expertise.


The Mattabesett Canoe Club at Harbor Park here in Middletown opens for the season this Friday March 15th, Featuring live music with Danny Quinn at 5:30 and on Sunday at 4pm The Canoe Club features fiddle  player Jeanne Freeman alongside accordion player Loretta Egan Murphy. At Real Art Ways in Hartford, tonight through Thursday You can catch the award winning Documentary Searching for Sugarman about the musician Rodriguez. Also showing through Thursday at Real Art Ways is: “Knife Fight,” an inside look at American politics with Rob Lowe playing a savvy strategist. Friday night you can catch "The House I Live In" a documentary examining the real effects of the War on Drugs.

Over at Cinestudio, Trinity College’s cinema, tonight and tomorrow You can catch "John Dies at the End" starring Paul Giamatti in a film that has been described as “Salvador Dali meets George Romero".

Right after the Jive at 5, from 5:05 to 6, it's Afternoon Jazz with Charles Henry, a well-rounded jazz show for fans of classic jazz.


Then at 6pm each weekday, it’s Free Speech Radio News From The Pacifica Network, for your evening dose of alternative international news and reporting.


6:30-8pm tonight,  Michael Benson brings you 75 % Folk offering a serving of contemporary folk and acoustic music with side orders of blues, jazz, world, pop, movie soundtracks, readings and occasional live interviews. Bring a big plate.


At 8pm, Nate is in the house with Anvil Isle a free form music show featuring everything from Surf rock to punk and indie rock plus Reggae, world music and blues.


From 9:30-11pm, it’s The Attention Deficit Disk Jockey with Lee, bringing you the music of yesterday’s future, today.

Then from 11pm-12am, It’s About Time! With DJ Meat Pie and SkaBoi101  a free form show including music from any and all genres, including a heapin' helping of indie, alternative, free jazz, hip-hop, shoegaze, hardcore punk, and contemporary poetry with a new theme weekly.

from Midnight – 4am DJ Otto Nation presents an eclectic mix of music from the WESU vaults


And then the BBC World News Service kicks on at 4AM followed at 5 by Morning Edition from NPR.
