Good evening! It’s Wednesday, April 30th and this is the Jive at Five – our daily community calendar and rundown of night time programming here on 88.1 FM, WESU Middletown, your station for NPR, Pacifica, independent and local public affairs by day and the best in free-form community programming weeknights and weekends. Here’s a rundown of some of what’s happening in our area this week.

You can experience the culture of Java this Thursday, with a Javanese gamelan performance in Wesleyan’s World Music Hall at 7 p.m.  This concert includes a prelude by the Wesleyan Youth Gamelan Ensemble.

On Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. a showcase of performances by student choreographers highlights the Spring Dance concert in the Patricelli Theater.  Also on Friday, May 2nd, the Taiko Drumming Ensemble performs both traditional and contemporary rhythm works at 9 p.m. in Crowell Concert Hall.

Green St opens their May art exhibit on Thursday featuring the art of Windsor painter Catherine Doocy who brings her show “Transitions,” a collection focusing on landscapes and the science of memory.  For more information, visit www.wesleyan.edu/greenstreet.

Up in Hartford, at Blackeyed Sally’s tonight, Tim McDonald hosts the weekly blues jam.

Thursday night the Connecticut Blues Society continues their Blues Competition.

Friday night they offer Dave Keller, winner of the Best Self-Produced CD award for 2012, playing soul and blues. Dave Keller is a Wesleyan Alum who was a music director at WESU during his time at Wesleyan. Saturday night award-winning blues artist Roxy Perry takes the Sally’s stage. Down in New Haven, at Café Nine tonight, the Connecticut pop band Going Pro takes the stage, along with Grizzly Whale.  The Miths, playing Smiths music, are featured on Thursday.

On Friday, the official New England Brewing Co band, Useless Degree, will be on during Brew On9, when you can sample craft and home brews while visiting businesses in New Haven’s Historic 9th Square Neighborhood, from 6 to 8 p.m. Later Friday night they’ll have singer/songwriter Milton on stage at 8 p.m., followed by the rock band Eurisko and singer/songwriter K. Bestia at 10.

Saturday, Café Nine’s weekly Jazz Jam session at  will be hosted by Mike Coppola and Friends, and Saturday night’s Killer Glam/Rock and Roll show at 9 p.m. will feature Prophets of Addiction, The Erotics, and Switchblade Serenade.  On Sunday,  the Mystic Blues Festival presents the All Star Blues Jam in support of the Center for Hospice Care at 4 p.m., followed by Greg Sherrod’s Blues Boot Camp at 8 p.m. For details go to www.cafenine.com

Also in New Haven, at Toad’s Place, tonight brings All Time Low  *** Man Overboard, and Handguns to the stage at 8p.m 

On Thursday, Toad’s offers “Bass Off 3”:  a Local EDM DJ Battle with a variety of performers.

This Month at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, you can catch WESU’s host of Acoustic Blender, Bill Revill's artwork on display in a show called “Down by the Sea”, with an opening reception on Saturday at from 4:00 - 5:30.

At 7:00pm  Thursday Bob Gotta  hosts his longstanding Monthly acoustic open Mic event. That’s followed by “Dance la Vie” at 9:00 with DJ Basil playing classic rock and contemporary tunes.  

On Friday Hartt School of Music Guitar Department will perform at 8 p.m., playing a variety of works for guitar, viola, and flute.
Saturday morning at the Buttonwood there'll be quigong (Chi Kung), tai chi, and community yoga, and a holistic healing workshop.

At 8 p.m. Sat night, Turkish-born jazz guitarist and composer Sinan Bakir performs tunes with a blended jazz/rock style.

On Sundays, Food Not Bombs serves food outside the Buttonwood at 1 pm; all are welcome. You are also invited to help prepare the meal beforehand at 11 am at First Church Congregational on Court Street.  Sunday, The Buttonwood Tree features the Mike Lorenz Jazz Trio at 3 p.m. followed by  the “Great Make Believe Improv Show”  at 7 p.m. featuring the live performances of

This evening, Manic Productions  presents  Fort Lean, Strange Kids, and Laundry Day at Bar in New Haven for a 10 p.m. show. 

Thursday, Manic presents Deerhoof, Awkwafina, and Celestial Shore at The Space at 8 p.m., and Friday brings Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s, Empires, and Kate Myers at the same venue, also at 8 p.m.

On Saturday Manic helps presents the Fauxchella CT Indie Music and Art Festival, starting at 2 p.m. at the Space in Hamden with performances by Kung Fu , Pissed Jeans,  MC PAul Barman,  MC Paul Barman, The McLovins, Political Animals, Ports of Spain, The Morning on Fire, The Vespers Nine and a bunch more CT acts. Wesleyan Potters presents “Black and White: A Members Show," running through June 22. The show features unique handcrafted clay, jewelry and fiber with a black and white theme. This Saturday, Gee Records presents The Legends, Beats, & Grooves festival, celebrating the roots of hip hop culture at Sound Spectrum / Club Lucent in Wallingford from 1-6pm. The event features living legends Grand Wizard Theodore (who invented the DJ scratch technique),  Rob-Swift (of the legendary  X-Ecutioners), Grandmaster Supreme, Billy Busch, and Middletown’s own DJ N-E-B.  all flexing their turntable skills.   Plus there will be a screening of the new documentary film, The legend of the Skull Snaps (about one of the most sampled tunes of all time). Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:

Through tomorrow, Real Art Ways in Hartford continues their run of "Nymphomania Volume I" and "Volume II,".

Friday Real Art Ways kicks off a 4-day run of two films:  “Mamele and Cohen on the Telephone,” a 1938 short sound comedy directed by Joseph Green, and  “Alan Partridge,” a British comedy starring Steve Coogan and Colm Meany, and directed by Declan Lowney.  www.realartways.org.

Tonight, at Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, brings the 2nd annual Reel Youth Hartford Film Festival, featuring the work of local high school students.

Tomorrow they’ll present New Theater Life’s “King Lear,” the Shakespeare play, and “Concussion,” written and directed by Stacie Passion. 

On Friday, Cinestudio screens all five films nominated for the 2014 Oscars in the Short Film category at 7:30 p.m.  Saturday at 2:30 they offer all five entries into the 2014 Oscar category for Short Film Animation. Next on Saturday they’ve got the third annual Trinity Film Festival, a red carpet event featuring short films by student filmmakers, followed by a reception and awards ceremony. Doors open at 4:30.  Sunday May 4th brings back the New Theater Live’s King Lear film, and “The Great Beauty” at 7:30, the 2014 winner of the Academy

Right after the jive at Five stay tuned for Wild, Wild, Live with Hibiki and Ethan Hill. A sneak peek into the magical live music scene of Wes. Tune in for in-station sets from campus bands and recordings of up-and-coming artists' campus shows.

That's followed by 30minutes Mind Matters with Doctor E. The show provides information and guest interviews on issues concerning mental illness. The focus is exploring holistic therapies and stories of individual achievement.

At 6:30,it’s Fusion Radio with James Fusion for 90 minutes of techno from around the globe mixed live since 1992. It's a vinyl world!

And at 8:00, Mike Nyce slows it down a few Beats per minute on The Warehouse. The best of underground house music, mixed live for your listening pleasure.

From 9:30 to 11 features the Vault with DJ Anton Banks. One the air since 1996! Anton presents listeners with the very latest in hard techno, minimal, tech-house and leftfield mixed live each week. The program regularly features exclusive music and mix sets from international producers and DJs.

at 11pm It’s 75 Years of...  For 75 years, WESU has broadcast underground music and under-represented genres. During our 75th Anniversary, this program will feature a different genre or theme each month, with songs chosen by our listeners and staff.

At 12:30 it's Space Music for Space with Cadet Q, bringing to the airwaves an exploration of the final frontier through listening to experimental dance, future beat and out there garage tunes. Join Space Cadet Q as we travel to spaces unknown.

At 1:30 am it's Proof of Concept with DJ JR and DJ Kevin, examining the history of concept albums in popular music and how this type of musical expression influences contemporary artists.

From 2:30 to 4am, stay tuned for Galactic Thematics with Tess and Rohan. Each show's cosmic vision will transgress "genre" itself by focusing around a specific theme. Space facts will be interspersed throughout our intergalactic voyage.

The BBC World News kicks on at 4am followed by Morning Edition from NPR at 5am.

Tonight, here in Middletown, Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts invites you to hear the Collegium Musicum perform at Memorial Chapel at 7:30 p.m., offering vocal and instrumental pieces from the medieval through the Baroque periods.

J-Cherry and the Strawberry’s host an hour of live local arts and entertainment from 8-9pm.

At 9pm  DJ Cheshire Cat offers presents a free form music show called, Wonderland.

At 10:30-catch This Southbound Train with Mary Barrett for bluegrass, newgrass, and other acoustic sounds. 

At 11:30pm Young & Restless with DJ Sleepy Girl asks: You know what the Midwest is?   Then advises…  Hold your questions: only yeses. Come and get it.

At 12:30am  Theme Party with Peninz and Stormin’ Norman is a radio show centered on a specific idea, time period, region, or subgenre every week.

 At  1:30 Excursions on a Wobbly Rail with DJ Shoelace, DJ Sandwich, and $pace Cadet will discuss a person/animal/phenomenon/historical event and play music tangentially related to the subject.
From 2:30-3:30 Carpe Noctem with “DJ Struggles” and “DJ Animal Ad” is where music meets the real world. 

From 3:30-4am its How We Met the Mother with Mizael Robledo features the diverse music that is background to the story of the television show, How I Met Your Mother.

Tuesday, here in Middletown, Wesleyan’s Center for the Arts invites you to
hear the Collegium Musicum perform at Memorial Chapel at 7:30 p.m., offering
vocal and instrumental pieces from the medieval through the Baroque periods.
You can experience the culture of Java on Thursday, May 1st, at 7 p.m. at a
Javanese gamelan performance in World Music Hall at 7 p.m.  This concert
includes a prelude by the Wesleyan Youth Gamelan Ensemble.

 
On Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. a showcase of performances by student choreographers highlights the Spring Dance concert in the Patricelli Theater.  Also on
Friday, May 2nd, the Taiko Drumming Ensemble performs both traditional and
contemporary rhythm works of Japanese Taiko drumming at 9 p.m. in Crowell
Concert Hall.

Tonight Manic Productions presents The Uncluded at the Space in Hamden, also
featuring Ceschi (chess-key)  and Baby Dayliner.  The performance is at 8
p.m.  On Wednesday, April 30th, they offer Fort Lean, Strange Kids, and
Laundry Day at Bar in New Haven for a 10 p.m. show.  Thursday May 1st, Manic
presents Deerhoof, Awkwafina, and Celestial Shore at The Space at 8 p.m.,
and Friday brings Margot and the Nuclear So and So’s, Empires, and Kate
Myers at the same venue, also at 8 p.m. On Saturday Manic offers the
Fauxchella CT Indie Music and Art Festival, with performances by Kung Fu and

Wesleyan Potters presents “Black and White: A Members Show," opening Wednesday, April 30 and running through June 22. The Green St. Arts Center in Middletown offer a Visual Arts Workshop on
Leonardo da Vinci on Tuesday, April 29, for teens and adults, at 6:30 p.m.
They open their May art exhibit on Thursday, May 1st, featuring the art of
Windsor painter Catherine Doocy who brings her show “Transitions,” a

The Hartford Public Library has a 5-week small business workshop series
beginning on Thursday, May 1st at 7:30 p.m.  For the fashion-oriented,
they’ve got an exhibit of Beatrice Fox Auerbach's garments and personal

This Saturday, Gee Records presents The Legends, Beats, & Grooves festival, celebrating the roots of hip hop culture at Sound Spectrum / Club Lucent in Wallingford from 1-6pm. The event features living legends Grand Wizard Theodore (who invented the DJ scratch technique),  Rob-Swift (of the legendary  X-Ecutioners), Grandmaster Supreme, Billy Busch, and Middletown’s own DJ N-E-B.  all flexing their turntable skills.   Plus there will be a screening of the new documentary film, The legend of the Skull Snaps (about one of the most sampled tunes of all time). Now here's a rundown of cinema off the beaten track in Central Connecticut:
Through Thursday, Real Art Ways in Hartford continues their run of
"Nymphomania Volume I" and "Volume II," about the memories of a
self-diagnosed nymphomaniac who's taken into the home of an old bachelor.
On Friday they kick off a 4-day run of two films:  “Mamele and Cohen on the
Telephone,” a 1938 short sound comedy directed by Joseph Green, and  “Alan
Partridge,” a British comedy starring Steve Coogan and Colm Meany, and

Tonight and Tuesday, at Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, there will be a screening of“The Last of the Unjust,” a shorter version of Claude Lanzmann’s documentary of
the Holocaust.  Wednesday brings the 2nd annual Reel Youth Hartford Film
Festival, featuring the work of local high school students.  On Thursday May
1st they’ll show New Theater Life’s “King Lear,” the Shakespeare play, and
“Concussion,” written and directed by Stacie Passion.  On Friday May 2nd
they screen all five films nominated for the 2014 Oscars in the Short Film
category at 7:30 p.m.  Saturday at 2:30 they offer all five entries into the
2014 Oscar category for Short Film Animation. Next on Saturday they’ve got
the third annual Trinity Film Festival, a red carpet event featuring short
films by student filmmakers, followed by a reception and awards ceremony.
Doors open at 4:30.  Sunday May 4th brings back the New Theater Live’s King
Lear film, and “The Great Beauty” at 7:30, the 2014 winner of the Academy

Now, here’s a rundown of some of what’s scheduled in the community this weekend.

Tonight and Saturday night at 7 pm and also at 2 pm you can catch the Spring Faculty Dance project "Threshold Sites: Feast", an view of life through the lens of food at the Cross St. Dance Studio. The Wesleyan Jazz Orchestra, directed by Adjunct Professor of Music Jay Hoggard ’76, and the Wesleyan Jazz Ensemble, directed by Jazz Ensemble Coach Noah Baerman kick off the 13th Annual Wesleyan Jazz Orchestra Weekend in Crowell Concert Hall at 8 pm and on Saturday at 8, the Oliver Lake Big Band performs there. Additionally, the Elizabeth Verveer Tishler Piano Recital takes place in Memorial Chapel on Saturday at 2 pm. In addition, on Sunday there are 2 graduate recitals taking place: Nathan Friedman at 3pm and Sean Sonderegger at 7pm in Crowell Concert Hall. The Vintage Players marks its 20th anniversary with the award winning play, "Dancing at Lughnasa," tonight through Sunday at 7pm at the Green St. Arts Center in Middletown.  This play is a semi-autobiographical reminiscence of the impact of change on the lives of five sisters and their family in a rural Irish community during the summer of 1936, written by Brian Friel.  

Tonight at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown present singer/songwriters Hugh Birdsall and Arlene Wow showcasing acoustic versions of their original songs with violinist Dana Takaki. Saturday morning at the Buttonwood there'll be quigong (Chi Kung), tai chi, and community yoga. Saturday evening at 8 p.m. enjoy Jussi Reijonen:Un, a group of musicians blending American and Scandanavian jazz with the folk music of the Middle East and Africa. On Sundays, Food Not Bombs serves food outside the Buttonwood at 1 pm; all are welcome. Right after the Jive At Five from 5:05 to 6:00pm it’s
 Chocolate Cake with DJ Rob. An hour long musical sugar high. Power-pop plus Brit-pop and singer/songwriters from the 60's to today.

From 6 to 6:30pm, pick up Blackout with dj smoothchilD. Upon waking up, dj smoothchilD and dj ROCK find out they are lost. Having no idea where they are, they must explore, listening to music, speeches, poetry, and anything else they can find to figure out where they are and how to get home. The first person to call in and guess the correct mystery location win's a prize (of the dj's choosing).

Coming in at 6:30 it's a half-hour with the Middletown Youth Radio Project - A weekly radio program featuring the thoughts, voices, creativity and talent of the kids in the WESU neighborhood.

At 7 until 8:30pm we have the Universal Sound Wave with Sistah Tee - Informing listeners about local and global issues with health, nutrition, and stress reduction tips, featuring a wide range of music including African, reggae, gospel, R&B, Latin, and blues.

Next up until 10pm, we take it
 From the Otherside with 
Rok-A-Dee - The Voice of Hartford, including local artists from Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island. He also features upcoming artists performing Caribbean R & B, Soca and international music.

At 10pm its Bassment Beats with DJ Lokash - Celebrating its 10th year of bringing you the latest in aboveground & underground hip-hop mixed live. At 10:30 DJ Lokash switches it up for his New World Show with the best in Global Bass mixed live.

At 11pm we switch formats again to bring you Maximum Rock & Roll Radio - A weekly radio show featuring the best international DIY punk, garage rock and hardcore from the astounding, ever-growing Maximum Rock n roll radio record collection.

At Midnight until 2am Saturday we go into OVERDRIVE with Clarence Scott and Shantay Scott - offering Urban Contemporary, Hip Hop, and Traditional gospel music.

Then at 2am we go 
In the Master Bedroom, Under the Bed with 
Dope Dave - Celebrating conscious hip-hop and its offshoots & influences. Acrobatic emcees and down-tempo poets mix it up over varied oceans of sound.

Sing Out! Radio Magazine with Tom Druckenmiller comes on at 4 until 5am with a weekly, hour-long “magazine format” program, featuring interviews in addition to “live” and recorded traditional folk musics.

And we bring in the daylight from 5:00 to 6:00am with the 
BBC World News 
- a daily News roundup from the British Broadcasting Corporation

And staying on the other side of the big pond, from 6:00 to 7:00am it’s
 the Celtic Café
 with Pat Laffan and Mark Gallagher presenting traditional and contemporary music with a Celtic connection.
