Here in Middletown  Mondays through Thursdays  from 10am-noon during August, Stacey Stroka leads The Buttonwood Tree’s Open Arts & Crafts program. Everyone is welcome!
Every first Thursday of the month there's an open mic with Bob Gotta, with sign ups starting at 6:30pm.
Friday night, CT native Randy Burns will be playing with The Brothers Radcliffe at the Buttonwood Tree at 8pm.
Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. All are welcome and invited to help prepare food at the First Church on 190 Court Street at 11:30 am.

 Tomorrow night down in New Haven is always the weekly dubstep dance party at Toad's Place, and Thursday brings the alternative rock band Our Lady Peace to the main stage at 9pm. Friday night rock out with Rock This Wild World, featuring Blacktop Forest, Tomorrow Just Started, The Restless and many more.  Saturday night Toads hosts the Wu Block Tour featuring Ghostface Killah and Sheek Louch. Also down in New Haven tonight Café Nine will have an indie showcase including Ceschi, Dark Time Sunshine and Crushcon 7. Tomorrow night Hadoukan presents a local metal showcase starting at 9pm. Thursday brings roots group Blue Pontiac to the stage, and Friday Night will see Detroit punk band Tyvek along with the Frustrations. • Café  N  ine’s Saturday afternoon Jazz Jam will be hosted by the Mike Coppola Trio this week. The Middletown Commission on the Arts present its annual Summer Sounds concert series on the City's South Green (Union Park) tonight and on upcoming Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. Tonight features the Kenn Morr Band. More information at arts2go.org.  


Also tonight, Klekolo World Coffee is bringing back a weekly poetry night hosted by Evan Okun. This will be every Tuesday from 6-8pm.

Tonight and on upcoming Tuesday nights in Hartford, you can catch  Mike Palin’s “Other orchestra” an 18-piece big band live on stage at Black-eyed Sally’s.  Tomorrow and every Wednesday night, Sally's hosts one of the longest running open blues jams in New England! On Friday, Aug. 3rd, the Middletown Commission on the Arts and Oddfellows Playhouse present the 24th Annual Children's Circus of Science. The talented young performers will bounce around like molecules in an atom, explore the elements of fire, earth, air and water, and of course there will be a mad scientist or two. The circus will explore a range of scientific subjects all the way from the dinosaurs and marine biology to string theory. Famous scientists -- or famous-scientist clowns -- be also appear. The circus will begin at 5 p.m. at Macdonough School at 66 Spring St., Middletown.

This Saturday there will be a FREE family friendly one-day Festival of Caribbean Food, Music, Games and Traditions at the Riverfront Plaza in Downtown Hartford. Live entertainment will include Leroy Sibbles, Calypso Rose, Anthem, the St. Lucia Folk Singers, Orquestra Espada, Junior Holt, Toussaint Liberator, Don Minot and many more. more information at tastct.org

ARTFARM presents Shakespeare Everywhere! The Compleate Work this Sunday, August 5th at 5pm in the Cedar Grove at Middlesex Community College in Middletown. The event, hosted by Chion Wolf, is the culmination of a month-long series of guerilla Shakespeare performances. Shakespeare scenes, monologs and songs plus live music and stories.  Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy a picnic in the beautiful grove overlooking the Connecticut River Valley.

 Speaking of farms, ‘tis the season for farmers’ markets and here’s a few in our area:
The Durham Farmers' Market is open every Thursday on the Town Green on Main St,  from 3 to 6:30 pm, through September. The longstanding Middletown Farmers’ market at the South Green is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 am to 1 pm through October. The Middletown North End Farmers Market is now open 10 am to 2 pm every Friday and is located at the corner of Liberty and Main Streets in Middletown.

From 10pm-Midnight, stay tuned for Wonderland with DJ Cheshire Cat. He's got a song in his heart, a chemical imbalance in his head and a musical library at his fingers. From krautrock to post-rock, grunge to garage, novelty to New Romantic, punk to prog, Wonderland has a place for it.

Then, from Midnight - 1:30 am, it's Back From Baltimore with Hannah Malloy, bringing you new and old psychedelic, indie, rock, folk, alternative, lo-fi music and at least a few tunes from Baltimore's music scene.

Also, here in Middletown tonight, Wesleyan University's Center for the Arts presents Steve Scionti's "Hear What's In The Heart: A Shoemaker's Tale" at 8 pm in the CFA Theater. Middletown's own Steve Scionti brings to life all the passion, comedy and drama inherent in a Sicilian-American family in a play co-written by director Anthony Crivello. On Friday night, at The Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, J Cherry and the Strawberries will perform a variety show entitled Voice of the City. This is a variety show from the heart of the community with performers of every style and sound, living, working, and creating in the city of Middletown and the surrounding area. It’s poetry, dance, song, comedy, and bits of wisdom. Where the community is the theater. Saturday night is a double header with Alli and the Oxen Frees and folk group Mumblty-Peg performing a benefit concert, with proceeds going towards Pathways To Go, Inc. The show starts at 8pm. Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of The Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. On Friday night, at the Buttonwood Tree in Middletown, J Cherry and the Strawberries will perform a variety show entitled Voice of the City.VOICE of the CITY, is a variety show from the heart of the community with performers of every style and sound, living, working, and creating in the city of Middletown and the surrounding area. It’s poetry, dance, song, comedy, and bits of wisdom. Where the community is the theater. 


Saturday night is a double header with Alli and the Oxen Frees and folk group Mumblty-Peg performing a benefit concert, with proceeds going towards Pathways To Go, Inc. The show starts at 8pm.

Food Not Bombs shares food about 1 pm in front of the Buttonwood Tree every Sunday. The Durham Farmers Market is open every Thursday on the Town Green on Main St, from 3-6:30pm now thru Sept.   The Middletown North End Farmers Market is open from10am-2pm every Friday and is located at the corner of Liberty and Main Streets. The longstanding Middletown farmers’ market is located on the south Green and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00 a.m.- 1:00 p.m. now through October.

Here’s a quick rundown of cinema off the beaten path here in central CT this week: Tonight, Cinestudio, the Trinity College cinema in Hartford, closes their run of “Moonrise Kingdom” by American film director Wes Anderson.  Tomorrow night Cinestudio presents a week long run of the dramedy, "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel." Through Thursday, Real Art Ways in Hartford continues their run of Polisse, the Cannes Film Festival winner that follows the daily lives of a tight-knit team of men and women working in the Child Protection Unit of the Parisian police. Friday will hold an ode to The Replacements, featuring a screening of Color Me Obsessed: A Film About the Replacements.
